I am in stage 4, with a GFR around 22...and my hair is disappearing everyday. I am almost at the point of wearing a scarf, which scares the heck out of me for some reason...maybe because it signifies how sick I really am, and I am not ready to show myself that way. Even though I have had 4 strokes, and am looking at dialysis very soon, people have no idea.
My nephrologist recommends the supplement CoQ-10, which is supposed to help with hair and nails. Personally, I would treat my hair carefully if I would have known a long time ago...
Over the years, due to many different illnesses, I have lost (and regrown) a lot of hair. Over a 2 year period I went through several "waves" of hair loss. As it grew back, I ended up with what looked like tree rings in the layers of my hair. I could tell I was much better when I had the last of the thin layers cut out and my hair was all even again.
In most cases, once things settle, your hair grows back again.
Judging by your user name, I assume you have thyroid probs as well. These can often lead to hair loss (which you're probably already aware of ). I wasn't aware that kidney probs caused hair loss. My husband has stage 3 renal disease but has not lost any hair.
Perhaps request a full thyroid panel lab test - TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and thyroid antibodies for Thyroid Autoimmune Disease. Also check your ferritin/vit. d/B12. Your results should preferably be at the high end of the lab range. See if you can get them to do a full hormone check as well - estrogen/progesterone/testosterone/ DHEA'S.
Has anyone with kidney problem experienced hair loss? I have lost about 50% of my hair over the last year. My GFR is 60.
if you Gfr is 60 you don't have a serious kidney problem jet,my advice is go with your doc. and control your blood pressure now before it gets worse.. your hair loss is just probabily a matter of getting more B vitamins specially biotin you can buy this supplement at any CVs or any store ,and try not to worry to much over your kidney deficience,if you control your BP,and stop consuming to much salt you be ok ...smile alittle ...marco
