I've always had really really thick, nice, soft, long hair. I started straightening my hair when I was 17, but even then my hair stayed very healthy.
A year ago my mom suddenly passed away, and it was really traumatic. Right away I noticed that I was shedding way too much hair. I've always lost some hair when I shower and brush my hair, but this was ridiculous. I would take literally a handful of hair out of the shower drain every single time I showered. Even when my hair was dry, every time I ran my fingers through it my hand would come out with a handful of hair strands. I did think it was weird, but I didn't tell anyone or seek medical advice because I figured it was probably from stress, not eating and sleeping well, etc.
It's been a year. (I'm 21)
My hair is soo THIN. It's healthy. I still have pretty long hair, no split ends, not dry, I don't straighten/blow dry.. it's just that it falls out so much that my ponytail is tiny now. I'm used to having really thick hair so I'm freaked out that if my hair doesn't stop falling out.. it will ALL fall out. I mean the extremely large amounts of hair falling out hasn't diminished in the past year. Right now if I start running my fingers through my hair, a pile of hair will accumulate on the floor. I'M FREAKING OUT!!
I looked online and the only thing I got was that I should talk to a doctor and that they could give me medicine to make hair grow. I'm not sure that's what I want. I mean.. the medicine would probably make all the hair on my body grow, not just on my head lol.
I'm just looking for some opinions.. should I go to the doctor? I really don't want to. I see enough doctors and they never fix anything anyway.
Is there something I could try at home? Something someone has used that has stopped hair from falling out too much?
Thanks in advance!
I forgot to mention- I don't think it's due to vitamin defficiency. I've been taking a multivitamin (Women's One-a-day) for years now. I also take an Omega 3 supplement and I use Fiber Choice a couple times a week.
Re: I'm getting concerned.. I think I might go bald
The bad news is that you likely will need to go to a doctor for help because you need a diagnosis. The hair loss is a symptom. The question is, of what?Low thyroid can cause this and it is easily diagnosed and treated. I think you need to rule out an underlying medical condition before you do anything else at this point. Just my two cents. Best of luck to you.
Re: I'm getting concerned.. I think I might go bald
Could be alopecia, however I doubt it. If you are taking birth control pills you should check and see if that is one of the side effects. If you don't see a dermatologist soon, you may be sorry!
Re: I'm getting concerned.. I think I might go bald
I think its stress. I have the same thing going on. I bought special shampoos and conditioners all kinds of vitamins and it hasn't slowed down. I had really thick hair too. I had gone to 5 different doctors. They don't have the answers. Numerous blood work and thyroid checks all came up ok. The hormones were all the right numbers as well. Doctors don't realize how depressing this is. Because its not your heart or cancer they think this is frivilous.
I have begun to think its stress as so much has been going on in my life. Anything with panthenol is good..Infusium, etc. Try someof the non sulfate shampoos at Whole Foods. Just keep putting some mousse when its damp and don't blow it dry too much. Don't use the brush to blow it dry , it pulls. . . ...scrunch it in your fingers. Leave it a little damp and let the rest air dry. You will see it at least looks like more hair...its quite full looking. I do use a curling iron...ceramic but very little.Tresseme' mousse is what I use and also their hair thickening shampoo.
Itake the b vitamins and biotin. Started them about 2 months ago....I can see a little new hair around my face...little tiny short hairs.Got my fingers crossed.
I wish you the best:

Re: I'm getting concerned.. I think I might go bald
I have a feeling it has something to do with your mothers passing. Anything that can cause severe stress can cause hair loss.
I could be wrong. You should definitely cross off anything that could cause this. Try going to a Doc, and see if it could be a medical problem. If it's stress there is a lot you can do, like meditation, relaxation techniques, soak in a nice warm bath... ect
Good Luck

Re: I'm getting concerned.. I think I might go bald
Thanks for the responses everyone~
I've never been on birth control so it's not that..
I didn't think it was stress, but it might be after all. I went to the doctor because I was getting migraines with dizzyness and nausea. I had a blood test done and everything came back normal soo I guess there's cure for that either! lol
For now I'll just try switching to a new shampoo to see how that works.. if it gets too much worse, then I'll probably see a dermatologist
