Post-Menopausal Hair Loss

I'm a post-menopausal female. My hair has been shedding, but what concerns me even more is the TEXTURE! It has become very dry and I get little tiny balls of tangle and a lot of breakage.

If anybody has experienced these symptoms, any advice on what to use? I've been to dermatologists (several times), and done the relevant lab tests (hormone, thyroid, ANA, etc.).

Re: Post-Menopausal Hair Loss

I too am post meno, and going through alot of the same thing myself..
Today,i went to see my endo doctor,on my thyroid resilts, and they were fine and normal!!
I do takre thyroid meds for my thyroid too..
I plan to see my regular doctor after the first,to run blood test to see if my body is laking in something that its not getting..
Also...the last 2 years may be the problem in itself..my daighter, now 40 had breast cancer, and maybe the stress and tole it took on me,is now showing up in the hair loss???
I eat right, dont drink or smoke, exersize, whatch what i eat, low fat and carbs..
Iam small framed,125lbs,so iam not sure what would cause it other than stress or just my age..
But i am going to do my best to find out!!!!!!!!
I will keep you posted about what all i find out!
If you happen to discover why, please let me know!!!

Re: Post-Menopausal Hair Loss

Hi Bren,

Thanks for replying. Did you get your Ferritin levels tested? Mine were in the normal range, but often low Ferritin levels can sometimes be the cause of hair loss as well. Any particular shampoo and conditioner that you use? I'm currently using Pantene products but they don't seem to have made a lot of difference. You mention that you're taking thyroid meds. Do you think that hair loss might be one of their side effects? But I'm assuming that you've already checked into that. How long have you been on them? You're right about the stress and I know that can often cause hair loss too.

Take care and please do post if you get any new info.

Re: Post-Menopausal Hair Loss

Use of a low dose estrogen patch may help as thinning and brittle hair can simply be related to normal aging in women and a sharp decline in level of estrogen. Conversely, when women are pregnant and estrogen levels are sky high, hair tends to look better than ever. I use the Vivelle Dot .05 mcg.

Re: Post-Menopausal Hair Loss

Same problem. I put a pantene stay-in conditioner on my pick and lightly work it in--I've had a lot of breakage and that's about the only way I can get the conditioner in without a mind-shredding bunch of breakage.
