Are hair flat irons really dangerous for my hair... =/ - Hair Problems Message Board

So my mom saw me use her flat iron, which I read the instructions carefully, figured out it was very hot, and it says "danger - not for home use" but I figured it was because it's some professional iron that hairdressers use so it's really powerful or something... so she says she doesnt want me to use it because it can damage my hair... oh come on is that true? she says it's for girls with long hair and my hair is too short ( it's around 2 inch long )... But I just want to use it on my front hair so I can pull it up with gel or wax, otherwise when I pull it up without ironing, it's impossible to tame and stays curly/wavy and kind of feels heavy and curves down... My hair is naturally wild T_T

Just wanted to know if there was an alternative to ironing that does the same effect, or special flat iron tips or if it can really damage my hair...

I love my flat iron, and I have very fine hair that is easily damaged. I think that my hair is actually in better shape since I started using it because I used to blow dry it every morning which was really hard on it. Now I wash my hair the night before and let it air dry, then just run the iron over it in the morning. I think it's important to use a really good thermal protector (ask your stylist) and not to over-do it. I don't obsess about getting every strand perfectly straight, so I'm not going over the same section of hair over and over again. Hope that helps!

Ok, when you say don't over do it, don't over do what? I just use the iron to straighten my front hair, do you mean I'm supposed to "pass" the hair on the iron just once?

Yeah, that's what I mean. It's tempting to go over it three or four times to get it perfect, but that damages it.
