Angry Unibrow!

Ok guys, I think I really screwed myself up with my eyebrows as an older teenager...

I'm 21 now, but once I reached the age of maybe 17.. the dark, black hairs started to become more visible inbetween. I have dark, thick eyebrows, but when I was younger, I shaved the unibrow several times, and after awhile, I started to use hot wax, it was some kind of stuff my sister used for her legs, lol. Now, since I've long moved on from those two things, I just pluck my eyebrows now, to form 2 eyebrows. What REALLY STINKS, is that the hairs grow in all awkardy in all different sorts of directions now and they grow fast as well, so I have to pluck maybe once every 5-7 days, so it doesn't become too noticeable again. I know some of you are probably thinking, why do all of this stuff? Just leave yourself the way god made you! Well, as I was younger I used to think unibrows were extremely unnatractive, and then I started to get one and I was I guess embarrassed, grossed out, hating it, just whatever.. so after shaving was a stupid idea and hot wax was a stupid idea, I had to move on to just plucking them, which works much better, but obviously is still a pain. Basically why I posted this is because I wanna know if other people have a similar problem as mine? Are there any products or medicines that may slow hair growth down? I'm all ready in a jam, because now I have to pluck no matter what.. 'cuz if I stop, I'll have one ugly lookin unibrow with hairs pointing in all sorts of directions!!!!!! I'm thinking the only solution is to get the hairs permanently removed, but I don't know if I wanna do all that!!!!!

Re: Unibrow!

You didn't do anything wrong that caused the remaining hairs to grow in what you believe to be different directions.

Almost certainly what happened is that they are appearing to grow in different directions because after repeated waxing and plucking, some of the weaker hairs become very, very thin or even stop growing almost completely. These hairs are no longer visible or dark in color. So the hairs that remain, the thicker ones, are still growing in the same direction they have always grown in, but you notice them now because the surrounding hairs are NOT noticeable.

Plucking every five to seven days is about average, too. Removing hair does not make it grow faster or thicker or darker -- this is a myth.

I do NOT believe you should leave yourself alone if you are unhappy with a part of your appearance -- by all means, you should look into methods of hair removal that will give you the look you desire.

The ladies here can help you with suggestions on at-home techniques.

My personal recommendation would be permanent removal of the hair with laser. This can be expensive and time-consuming and results may vary, but I believe the general consensus is that this type of treatment is the best available at the moment. Probably waxing would be considered the next best option.

Oh, and for the record -- SOME of the thicker, darker eyebrow hairs that you are currently plucking MAY ultimately thin out like the surrounding, weaker hairs did. But this will take several years -- if it happens at all. Sometimes some hairs NEVER become thin from repeated plucking.

Good luck and don't worry -- you didn't do anything wrong.

Re: Unibrow!

Actually, on the glabella (unibrow), electrolysis is preferred over laser hair removal for permanency. Electrolysis can give a more natural appearance. Also, when this area is tweezed or waxed, it can alter the direction that the hair grows in. Hairs under the brow line can weaken from tweezing or waxing, but not the glabella.
