Need Help SEVERLY matted daughters hair - Hair Problems Message Board

Hello, Please please please help me.....I am the mother to a 13 yr old daughter who about 3 yrs ago now developed a rare and as of now incurable disease which left her in and out of hospitals and mostly in bed for about the first 19 months of this illness. During that time with her health and future so uncertain her hair was just NOT a priority as she always hated having it combed, etc. She is a a bit more active now and a teenager (ugh) so wants to do all herself and I believed her when she told me her hair was OK..She has very fine hair but a TON and I mean a TON of it....Well she finally showed it to me last week and underneath...you would have never noticed it...thats how much hair she has....there was a mat about 6 inches in length and 2 inches THICK......We began leaving conditioners, etc....Well last night I finally had to cut off a large section of her almost waist length hair....she wears it in ponys a lot so it will look ok...here is the worst part....There remains about a 2 inch thick 2 inch long section that is completely and I mean entirely matted section straight to her scalp!!!!!...What can I do? She wont go a hairdresser.....She has been through sooooo much already with this illness....It would kill me to hurt her anymore than I absolutely have to but what do I do with this mess?? HELP ME>>>>

There are detangler products on the market. I don't remember name of what my little granddaughter brought for me to use on her hair yesterday (she has naturally curly, curly hair and difficult to comb or bruch).

Frizzease is one brand of products that will help. I would work it into the matted mess and then try to gradually comb it out little by little.

Sorry to hear abput your daughter, I have to use biosilk you can get it in hair salons the frizz ease may also work they are very simalar, also try baby lotion conditoner is a type of lotion leave it in as you comb a little bit at a time, make sur to hold the part you are combing so it does not hurt as bad you can also try using a bristle brush than switch to a comb. Just wondering what you found to get through your daughter's tangles.
I went through this with my youngest when she was 6 or 7. She always insisted she comb her own hair and quite honestly, it looked good. She too has fine hair, and lots of it!!! One day I decided to really comb it well and found what you did. I about flipped. The only solution for us was to cut the underneath out. Now, she does keep it shorter underneath to prevent this from happening again. I can relate to your story; it was a nightmare!!
