Biotin - how long??

For those of you that take (or have taken) biotin, how long did you take it before you saw results? Also, what dosage were (are) you taking? I've been taking 5mg (5000mcg) for about two weeks. Obviously, that's not a long enough time to see results, but I was just wondering when could I expect to see any? I have a 60-day supply and I'm hoping to see some improvement by then. My hair is very thin due to medications I've taken in the past, you can see my scalp, especially when my hair is wet. I'm not taking any meds at all now. The last one I was on, I went off of just over a month ago. I used to have really thick hair and I miss it. I'm really depressed about this. It seems everywhere I look lately, I see women with long thick hair, and it really bums me out. Please don't suggest Rogaine, as I'm not interested in trying that. TIA for any replies.

Re: Biotin - how long??

Hi Kittywitty!

I take Biotin Forte 3mg as recommended by my dermatologist. I also take iron supplements for low iron. I have been taking the Biotin since Jan. 21st. I don't really see any improvement yet. Maybe a little less hair loss, and maybe some regrow around my crown - but I think that was coming in before. I have a little new growth, but I keep losing hair faster than I am replacing it.

I used to have super thick hair too - my hair stylist usually had to go through and thin it out a little. I notice people's hair more now that I am so obsessed about mine. However, I have also noticed a lot of women's hair that is really thin too.

Re: Biotin - how long??

I am taking biotin for my nails/hands due to dry weather and I saw results almost right away. I did not notice anything on my hair but went for a cut Saturday and the stylist noticed improvement.

Re: Biotin - how long??

Biotin Forte has Biotin plus other vitamins.

My bottle says Biotin Forte 3mg with Zinc. It also has...

Vitamin C 333%
Thiamin 667%
Riboflavin 588%
Niacin 200%
Vitamin B6 1250%
Folic Acid 200%
Vitamin B12 167%
Biotin 1000%
Pantothenic Acid 100%
Zinc 200%

I had a hard time finding it at regular pharmacies.

Re: Biotin - how long??

Thanks, bunny. Well, I'm already taking a multivitamin for women that has all those things. I also take a B complex, and Zinc. Since I'm taking all of this, wouldn't regular Biotin be enough? Btw, they're all whole food type (not synthetic) vitamins/minerals.

Re: Biotin - how long??

Yes, I would say what you are taking is fine.

What is the difference between synthetic and whole foods?

Re: Biotin - how long??

I'm not sure exactly, I've just been told by various people that the whole food ones are better.

There's a thread on the 'Vitamins & Supplements' board titled 'Centrum or 1 a Day' where someone explains it better. The post is on page 3 of that thread.

Re: Biotin - how long??

How much biotin do you need to take a day?

I just bought a multivitamin for Hair, Skin, and Nails. It has 3000 mcg biotin, and the serving size is 3 tablets.

It's hard to find something with high biotin.

It also has some other vitamins too.

Re: Biotin - how long??

I just take Biotin by itself. The lady at the vitamin store where I got it told me, for optimum results, don't take anything less than 5mg (5000mcg). They are capsules and the serving size is just one a day. The brand is Country Life.

Re: Biotin - how long??

I think it's working!!! I just came from the hairdresser today and she said my hair has grown at least one inch. Yay!! She said she's never seen it grow that much before. It's only been five weeks since I saw her last! The growth is usually way slower than that. I'm sooo excited!!

Re: Biotin - how long??

Hi Kittywitty,

Last June my hair started falling out in clumps, so much I dreaded taking a shower because I would have to see all my hair in the drain.

I went out and bought Biotin 5,000 mg from Walmart, and within 1 month my hair stopped falling out. Within about 3 months, I really started to notice my hair getting thicker and longer. Now my hair looks better than it ever has and grows very fast!!!!

I'm so happy it's working for you too!!!

Re: Biotin - how long??

Biotin also know as Vitamin H should be taken with the B-group vitamins, but Vitamin C, Vitamin B 5 (pantothenic acid), Vitamin B12 and sulfur are good companions to it.

If you damage your hair, it can't heal. You just have to do what little you can to repair the damage or cut the damaged hair off and wait for more hair to grow back. Even healthy hair is dead. It may be thick and lustrous, but it contains no living tissue.

Biotin will not make the hair you already have fuller and thicker or shiny but to the new growth it will.

Silica - Strengthens hair and prevents hair loss
Magnesium - Works with calcium to promote healthy hair growth
Manganese - Prevents slow hair growth
Chromium - Helps prevent hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, both of which can cause hair loss
Copper - Helps prevent hair loss as well as defects in hair color and structure
Selenium - Keeps skin and scalp supple and elastic

A good multi vitamin would help alot as well sinice most of the above are in alot of mult vitamins.

Jenteal

Re: Biotin - how long??

Are those facts FDA approved ?

I recently bought a multivitamin for hair growth, but it said that it may help, but the statements on the vitamin bottle are not proven to work.

Re: Biotin - how long??

They put that FDA statement on all vitamins and supplements. It doesn't mean it won't work. Give it a try.

Re: Biotin - how long??

I started taking 5000mcg of biotin a couple of years ago with my women's multi vitamin/mineral. It took at least 3 weeks to start working. I did that for about 4 months and now I only take 2000mcg every other day with my vitamins and my hair and nails look great!
