musty hair smell

My daughter is a competitive swimmer with very thick shoulder length hair. She practices every evening (and wears a cap), but her hair has developed this awful musty/mildew smell. I have special clarifying shampoo for swimmers, but nothing works. The smell is bad, but I am just imagining mold spores multiplying on her head...YUCK!!!!! I have looked all over the internet for a magic cure (prior to me washing her hair with tilex...just kidding) but have found nothing. Please help!!!!!
