white patch developed over 3 week period

My husband developed a pure white patch of very thin hair over a period of 3 weeks. The rest of his hair is salt and pepper. In the last 3-4 weeks, about half of his head is white with one grey spot and the rest is salt and pepper. It looks very strange and people keep asking him if he is ill. Has anyone heard of such a thing and is there a good way to dye the white area to blend in better? I have tried Just For Men, but this only made it a slight bit darker and it still really stands out. This does not matter to me at all, but it bothers him quite a bit and I would really like to help him. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
