Unhappy Blood in eye after a headache?

Hi all!

Wednesday night after dinner I was sitting in the floor playing with my daughter & out of nowhere my head felt as if it were going to explode. It was right behing my right eye & I that I was going to be sick. It was not like the migraines I get, but still very bad. I went and took a shower & went to bed. I woke up about 3 hours later & it was still hurting and I went into the bathroom for a wet rag & I noticed that my right eye was full of blood! What happened to me? I have called my Doctor, but his office is closed & they gave an "on-call" nimber & nobody has called me back yet. My head still hurts sometimes, but it is really nothing to complain about. I have learned to live with my migrains and so this is really nothing. It is just the bloody eye that scares me. A friend of mine says I should go to the E.R., but I do not think I want to do that. If the pain was bad I might consider it. I am just not sure what to do.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!
Kim

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

I know that some people get a bloodshot eye during a cluster headache. Cluster headaches usually are around the eye, so it sounds like thats what you could be dealing with. Good luck

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

It is actually blood. The entire part of my eye that is normally white, is blood. It appears that the blood vessels in my eye have ruptured. I get cluster headaches along with the migraines & it was not like any other headache I have ever had. It is very strange!

Thanks for the advice though.

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

I would agree with your friend that a trip to the ER is in order. The only time I've heard of that type of problem is in response to a head injury. My friend's nephew was shaken so bad one burst and I had one burst, but it took falling off a horse, head first in a dead run!!!
I don't know what it could be, but it's better safe than sorry. You don't want to go to your doc monday and have him say...."Well, if ya had gone in sooner we could have done something." Never a bad idea to be on the safe side. Pop back in and let us know. But don't wait.

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

you could always try something like NURSE DIRECT or whatever is in your area...its nice if you don't want to go to the ER you can just call and speak to a nurse about your problem and they can advise you what to do...its free and confidential - not anonymous though, they will take down your name and such. I would check the internet for a NURSE DIrect (or ASK-A-NURSE) number to call.
One example is here :

Good luck to you.

Hi Kim,
Just thinking about you and wondering if you found out what was wrong and if you are feeling better?

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

I actually called the E.R. today and spoke with a Triage Nurse, & she did not seem to be that concerned about it so I did not go in. She called it some sort of an Anurism (sp?) but she said it so fast I could not understand her & she was in a hurry. I am going to call my Doctor on Monday & see what he says. The blood is almost all gone now, but I am still having a headache several times a day.
I will let you know what he has to say after I talk to him!

Thanks for checking in on me, you an !

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

If she said it was an aneurism, the only ones I'm aware of are bleeds in the brain!!! If that's the case, especially since you're still having headaches...you need to go in now!!! That's nothing to mess with. She may not have sounded concerned because there was a huge emergency coming through the door and didn't have time to tell you to haul a** into the ER.
I don't know if there are different types, get on the internet and look. The only ones I know of are in the brain and can be deadly if left alone. Some completely blow killing the person or stroking them out and some can continue a slow bleed. I don't know if blood in the eye is a symptom of this but I know headaches are.
A friend of mine was on the phone with his wife when he heard her scream, fall to the floor and no response on the phone. He called 911 from work and sped home to find his wife dead on the floor from a massive aneurism. They aren't always fatal but nothing to mess with.

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

Actually, and anuerysm is a weakness in any vessel not just the brain. It was probably an anuerysm of a vessel in her eye that broke.

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

That's good to know, because I've never heard of it before. The only way I had a bleed in my eye was by taking a head first plunge off a horse, full gallop!
But what about the headache that was worse than previous headaches and the fact that they occured together??

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

A little history might help out here.

When I was 10 I was hit by a truck & the bumper of the truck hit my forehead and then the back of my head hit the concrete. The truck was only going about 10 mph....but it still hit me. I was taken to the hospital & they sent me home with a few good knots on my head & I was fine for about 15 years. 15 years later I began to have seizures for some un known reason & the Neurologists have al pin pointed it back to the whole truck thing. Something about scar tissue on my brain stem....Who knows if that is really why. I have had migraines and clusters for as far back as I can remember. I am not sure though if they started before getting hit or not. That was too long ago. I have had blood in my eye after a headache before, no one ever seemed that concerned about it & I was never really given any type of explination for it either. The Doctors have allways seemed to "dance" around that question, just like evry other question I have had for them. They REFUSE to say the 3 simple words "I DON'T KNOW". They just really hack me off. My family Doctor that I go to now is wonderful and he will do his best to give me an answer to a question & if he can't, he will research it. & If he still can't find answer, he will tell me he does not know, instead of making up a bunch of BS that no one can understand.

I will call him in the morning & see what he thinks & if he wants me to, I will go on to one of many Neurologistss.

Thanks for the help guys!

Big hugs to you!

Kim

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

On your history, they may be right. I fell off the horse at 16. They didn't do any brain scans or MRI's to see if there was any damage. The migraines started right after that. In fact they are pointing to that as a possible cause of my narcolepsy since it doesn't run in the family.
I found out when I had an MRI last year that I have a large mass of blood vessels on the left side of my brain and they weren't sure why. When I asked my new doc he said it was on the left because I fell on the right, the brain took the injury on the other side and the cranium was injured on the right. The blood vessels were the brains way of bypassing what was damaged in the spill.
The seizures could definately be related. When the brain is injured it does weird things to adjust, sometimes they aren't the best for our physical body. As for the docs running around your questions, I don't think it's physically possible for their mouths to form those words in that order!! Maybe look up the bleed in the eye in conjunction with the headaches. Also check research about the aftermaths of head injuries.
If it's happened before, I guess it's less likely to be a major problem. But not having answers is awful.
I like your new doc. I wish they had to take a course in "I don't know, but I'll find out." LOL Would make life better than the ones who were top of the class in "As*ology 101!!"

Re: Blood in eye after a headache?

Not sure if this is what you are experiencing or not but just wanted to make sure you were aware of Hortons syndrom that comes along with cluster headaches. I have clusters also. Your eye will turn blood red, will droop, the pupil will dialate, your nose may run or get stopped up. These symptoms all occur on the side of the head that the headache is occuring on. You may experience none of these, some of these, or all of these. Good luck in finding out what is wrong with you.
