migrains without the pain - Headaches & Migraines Message Board

In the last few months I have gotten very strange effects going on in my head. Someone said it it a migrain- I am not sure what it is. I get no pain but all of a sudden out of nowhere I have a wavy line or floater forming in my eyes so that when I look at anything it appears difficult to see clearly. It starts out small and sometimes will totally effect my entire vision so anything I look at is a strain. It looks like maybe I have a piece of dust in my eye. I get pressure in the eye area and feel generally weird but no pain. It can last anywhere from 1 hour or longer and when it leaves I feel really weak and strange. My head feels tense afterwards as do my eyes. I was told this is a migrain without the pain?
If anyone has this tell me what you know and what do you do or take for it. I usually do not take anything just rest if I am home and lay down with a cold compress on my head.

I have what you are describing, although I don't get it very often. It comes maybe every 6months to a year, and at that time maybe it will come 2-3 times, then I'm fine for another 6-12 months. I don't get pain either. Just "spots" so that I can't see out of certain spots in my eye. I talked to a general MD, and an optometrist and both suggested the migraine, but said that I'm not getting the pain (luckily!) I was just reading on the mayoclinic site last night that there are a certain number of people who get it like that. I would still mention it to a doctor to make sure that is what you have and they can rule other things out. I haven't had it in a long time, but I'm also being treated for TMJ, and some of it may have been caused by that. YOu don't have jaw troubles, do you? If you do, there's a TMJ forum on this board as well.

Beth, I do not have TMJ. But I do grind at night.
I also get them in stages like you- two or three within a speciic time period and then nothing for months. I did talk to my HMO doctor ( he is not very good) and he said not to worry but like I said I do not trust him as a MD.
I'll keep a watch on them.
Isn't is a weird sensation when it happens? So odd and sudden. Do you feel strange afterwards/ what do you take for it? I've had them at work and that is very difficult becausue I can not rest there.

I don't take anything for them because they don't hurt. I just kinda stare in awe when it happens because it always surprises me. I can't remember really how I feel when it happens. Maybe a little out-of-it. I have been driving a couple times when I've gotten it, and should have pulled over. I know I will next time. Have you gotten your eyes checked recently? If not it wouldn't hurt to go to a optometrist and mention it to him/her too. Maybe switching MDs wouldn't be a bad idea either if you feel you can't trust him. That's not a good thing.
