Are you using a really high pillow?? i used to get those because my pillows were like mount everest and having your head at the weird and unnatural angle puts a lot of stress on those muscles.
I use a memory pillow that is thicker at the front and back to support the neck and thinner in the middle for the head to go. I've been much better since I've used it. Every now and then - while I'm asleep - I move over to my other pillow (a regular one) and wake up all stiff, achy and with a headache.
Sometimes if I have a bad neck i use NO pillow at all and try to lay on my back - it really helps.
