Question Can migraines make you pass out?

I think I've started getting migraines. A few weeks ago I had a serious insomnia attack and didn't sleep more than 4 hours from tuesday-saturday. I was completely exhausted, dizzy and nauseous and then this pounding headache just came from nowhere like someone was smashing on the inside of my skull with a sledgehammer right on my left temple area. My left arm went completely numb, and my leg started to do the same. Stupidly, I decided to go for a walk in nearby woodland (this helps when I have a normal headache), and promptly passed out. I came around probably about 10 minutes later, stumbled home, and lay on my bed in agony until it abated a bit and I fell asleep. When I woke up (17 hours later!) it'd gone completely.

Same thing happened this week, only I'd only missed one night of sleep. Sudden onset (over maybe 15 minutes, if that), nausea, dizziness and numbness, and then just keeling over.

But I've read a little and nowhere does it mention migraines making people pass out. I have a feeling it's just a stress response from the pain - I faint when I get tired/stressed/hungry. Or do migraines just do this?

Thanks.

Re: Can migraines make you pass out?

I have had migraines since I was 9 years old, but have never had one make me pass out. I personally have never had a sudden onset like you described.

Lack of sleep is a known trigger for some people, but I would recommend getting in to a doctor to have an evaluation.

Re: Can migraines make you pass out?

I've also had migraines since I was a child, and have never fainted from one. You might want to talk to your physician about your headaches. I know that's an obvious suggestion, but my doctor thought my abnormal migraines could be triggered by small seizures. She sent me to a wonderful neurologist who specializes in seizures; and though after extensive testing we found I was seizure-free, I learned that there are different types of seizures. Seizures can cause auras, loss of consciousness, headaches, and migraines. They also have similar triggers to migraines: lack of sleep, missed meals, flashing lights, and certain foods to name a few. It may not be the answer to your problems, but I don't believe it is common to pass out from a migraine, and you should see a doctor.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

Exclamation Re: Can migraines make you pass out?

Sorry for all you have had to endure! Look up Hemapalegic (sp?) migraines. They can have an effect on coordination and numbness on one side. Depends on which side they effect but they are dangerous!!!! A HM can shut down heart, lungs, and make you pass out. See a good migraine specialist if you think this could be your problem. Maybe even a neurologist. Please don't feel alone, I know a young lady that has this type of migraine and Depacote is helping her. Best of luck.
