IV for Migraines - Headaches & Migraines Message Board

I just want to know has anyone ever gotten IV for migraines and if so does it help any?

What kind of IV? I was hooked up to one when I went to outpatients once. It was Morphine. It helped as far as knocking me out. That I liked.. but I don't care for the rest of the effects of Morphine. Once it wore off the pain was right back. Demerol works better for me, injection form.
Were you talking about getting an IV drip at the doctors office or at the hospital?

Actually my neurologist told me that whenever my migraines are to much to handle just come to the building and get treated. So yeah, I would say its a more a office type.

Hi Joe,

If he def. said 'by IV' and not just by injection, it sounds to me like he will try something like DHE IV which is quite and effective abortive medication, in a hospital setting, for some people. Much more effective than if taken by mouth.

If he were just giving y ou pain medication like morphine or Demerol, he would probably give it to you IM.

I was just at Cleveland Clinic last week, and had a migraine while I was there. My doctor ordered an IV drip of Depakon. It took about an hour, so it is fed through rather quickly. Within that hour, my headache dropped from a 7 to a 4. The good thing is the medication continued to work after I had left the clinic. After about another hour my headache was gone. I am excited about this treatment as I have usually had to have a shot of Demarol with an anti nausea added. I cannot take the triptans as they cause rapid heartbeat and that scares me.
Depakon is an anti-convulsive, and I took the tablet form for a couple years before I was changed to Neurontin.
