migraine sufferer and pregnant. Whats safe? - Headaches & Migraines Message Board

I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and am suffering from migraines again. I use to get them about 6 or so times a year and then during my first trimester I had several that sent me to the ER. I haven't had one for months and yesterday I got another one. The migraine is still at the edge of my head right now as I type at work. I have been prescribed vicodin but that has little to no effect and just keeps them at bay for a little while. Yesterday I was giving an IV drip of demerol which seems excessive to me. Does anyone know of any natural remedies? Any medication that may be safe during pregnancy? Anything???

I get migraines all the time, and when I was pregnant I had very few choices as well. It was either vicodin, darvocet, tylenol #3's or a trip to the ER in which they gave a shot of demerol. Unfortunatley, they won't give you any of the migraine meds such as imitrex, relpax, zomig, etc. because they could be harmful to the baby. I ended up just having to suffer through the pregnancy with the migraines. The pain pills didn't help much. They just took the edge off of the pain and helped me sleep. Once I got through the first trimester, I did not get as many migraines. I know this probably wasn't much help since I didn't give you any answers, but I don't think there are any.

Have you tried Excedrin? It's weird, but sometimes when my Vicodin doesn't work, Excedrin will. I usually take Relpax, but apparently you can't take it, bummer. Hope you feel better soon.

I agree with the Excedrin, though they may not want you to take it since it contains aspirin. The dose may be low enough though to be safe. Ask a pharmacist. I know it sounds too simple, but during my second pregancy I had the the same problem. Two tylenol with a two squirts of Afrin nasal spray did the trick!

I had migraines during my whole pregnancy and they got worse for a short time after. I ended up in the er a day after my 6 wk check up. During my pregnancy and after, because I breast fed, I bought a few bags of peas and burried my head in the bags of frozen peas. I would also take a cold shower and hold my head under the cold water. Darvocet and tylenol and ibuprofen just did not work. Also the nurse who was a migraine sufferer told me to drink 1 soda a day. Now my migraines are down to one migraine every 6 months. They are mainly pressure with very little pain. And yes nose spray does work! Good luck. I feel for ya.
