Question Lightheadedness/pressure in ears

33 year old male.

Does anyone have the following symptoms:

-pressure, fullness in ears
-slight headache but most all of the time
- pressure in head
- popping sound in ears when swallowing, opening mouth
- generally tired and brain is in a fog, cannot focus
-feel like you want to blow nose to clear head, but cannot
-symptoms worse inside than outside
-when I talk a lot I get more lightheaded and my voice gets more raspy.

I have had these symptoms for probably 7 years. I've been to neuorologists, ENT doctors, sleep apnea people, allergists, chiropractors, massage therapists....I'm at a loss. I've been to National Jewish Medical Center and Dallas Environmental Health Center. Anyone have success treating these symptoms? I am driving my wife and family crazy..they must think I am depressed or something, but I am really just terribly frustrated!

Have you been tested for TMJ? I have it and it causes a slew of symptoms. It can be diagnosed by a dentist, and there are TMJ specialists. There's a TMJ board on this site. Good luck. I hope you find relief soon. Sue

I went to one TMJ guy a long time ago, but it hasn't been an avenue I've taken very much. As for a diagnosis, no, I've gotten nothing. Every serious thing has been ruled out but I still feel like a used dishrag. Hard to function with this continuous lightheadedness and pressure in ears sometimes.

Re: Lightheadedness/pressure in ears

I get pressure in my ears sometimes too. I go to Acupuncture once a week and it's gotten rid of my ear pain and pressure.

Have you been tested for Labyrinthitis? Sounds like you have the symptoms to me. Alot of ENTs will overlook it- you need to go to a Neuro Otologist. Go to Labyrinthitis board here and see if anyone sounds like you. There is definitely something wrong with your ear(s) in my opinion.

Re: Lightheadedness/pressure in ears

About 2 or 3 years ago I suffered from a very nasty ear infection, a few months after this ear infection one day I had a very loud crackling sound constantly going on in my ear and the pressure of it was very uncomfortable, I tried to and still do try and relieve the pressure by holding my nose and popping my ears and this has become habit. Later in the day this still hadn't gone so I was thinking of contacting the doctor to see what the problem is. (Im also one of those people who will never go to the doctors and just hope that things clear up)

Since this ear problem I have had many other symptoms on a daily basis. Here is the following problems that I suffer from:

* my ears / head feels like it is full of water
* hearing has become extremely poor
* foggy thinking / cannot think clearly
* when waking up in mornings feeling of no sleep / very little (although around 8 hour sleep everynight)
* feel fatigued / energy levels are low most times of the day
* anxiety
* constant head aches / migraine (feels like my head has been tightened up & left in a vice - I have forgotten what its like NOT to have a headache
* pains in back of my neck leading to headaches in back of my head
* sinus pains in cheeks, around eyes, aching jaw
* balance is not at all as good as it used to be
* nose is always bunged up / blocked
* ears crackle / pop when yawning or opening mouth

Does any of this relate to you?

Question Re: Lightheadedness/pressure in ears

Hi TitoOrtiz
This post has caught my eye, and as I was reading through alot of what you wrote, which is exactly how I feel. I am wondering if your symptoms were tmj related or inner ear related. I posted my symptoms on other boards they are as follows:
Tension type headaches, constant pressure feeling in my head like a ton of bricks are sitting on my head or a tight band or vice around my head, pressure behind my eyes that make it difficult to focus/function, my eyes always feel tired, dry burning as if I haven't slept in days. If I close my eyes and look up I could feel the pressure in my eyes, at times it effects my vision as if my vision gets jumpy. Feeling disconnected from myself, dreamlike everything seems off Dizziness/Lightheaded this is my main complaint, I feel like I am on a boat swaying/motion sensation, sometimes it feels as if I am falling to the side or a dropping sensation the kind you get in an elevator. Best way to describe it..
seems to be worse when standing, sitting or walking, and subsides if I lay down. My head always feels out of it, like I am drinking all day when not!
My ears have pressure and fullness with some deep sharp pains now and then, A crackling sound that feels like I have a bad radio station connection, This is made worse or brought on with yawning, speaking, swallowing and loud noises, yelling, etc. I can't figure why I have this crackling sound?
My jaw has a popping, cracking sound directly in the jaw bone close to where your jaw and ear meet. Eating foods that are hard make this symptom worse among yawns that are big!
My neck and shoulders are always sore, I notice if I lean my neck back and move my head side to side there is a horriable cracking popping sound that comes from the base of my neck, my trigger points are painful.
I wake up everymorning feeling like I was hit by a truck, tired, jaw tightness, fullness and soreness in ears, swollen eye lids, pain in head around temples, lightheaded.. And on top of it all I have anxiety which I bet is no Big surprise. I guess my main question is does this all sound tmj related? I mean I know tmj can mimic other illnesses and visa versa but could these symptoms really be tmj caused or perhaps I should be looking into an inner ear disorder? I know tmj could be related to dizziness. And dizziness could be related to 1000 other illness. But I am wondering if the dizziness/off balance thing for me could be related to the jaw? I have been suffering now for quite some time now. If I am not mistaken you said in your post it all started with an ear infection? I have had these symptoms for a few years now, could a ear infection really carry on this long?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.
Boxerlover

Re: Lightheadedness/pressure in ears

Hey boxerlover,

Woah It looks like we have pretty much the same problems then. I have that popping/clicking in the base of my neck! it sounds like a really nastycracking sound? I never really thought much of this though as I just thought it might just be a dodgy joint.
Have you been to see a doctor about all your probs? If so what did they have to say about it? Im wondering if the original ear ache I had all that time ago is actually anything to do with all these problems Im having now, maybe the infection never cleared up properly and caused some damage inside the ear? Its all possible I guess...

I have just read up a bit on TMJ as i'd never heard of it before and all the 'SECONDARY SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH TM JOINT DISORDERS' are familiar. (Ear aches not associated with an infection, A sense of fullness in one or both ears, Frequent headaches,Ringing in the ears,Neck Shoulder pain)
Its hard to tell what it is though to be honest, as I have been reading a few different illness's with many similar sypmtoms. Its not looking good as most people who are having the same probs also seem to have had them for years and have seen many doctors without getting a proper explanation as to whats causing them.

Here is a few other things I also have which you can maybe relate to. I find it EXTREMELY difficult to concerntrate on simple things even if its something that really appeals to me? It just seems to get clouded out and im only 22 years old and my concentration level used to be v.good. My ears sometimes (but very rarely) seem to clear and my hearing becomes perfect again but this is only for literally a couple of seconds and its gone again into muffled/blocked.
One more thing I forgot to mention is my balance and dizzyness seems is constantly poor but seems lot worse in the mornings up until around midday.

It will be interesting to hear your response again!

Hi Tito
Thank you for your reply!
I must say everything you describe in your post are symptoms I could have written myself. It is amazing yet sad that there is somebody else out there that feel as horriable as I do with the exact same symptoms and no answers.
Let's see where should I begin. This has been such a long journey for me, I have been suffering for a few years now with horriable headaches, loss of balance/vertigo, brain fog as I like to call it, in other words Lack of concerntration, anxiety, fatigue, ear issues and all the wonderful other symptoms I wrote to you in my previous post.
I can tell you this most of my Doctors visits were "you are suffing with anxiety" which is a given but the ANXIETY is caused by the not knowing the unknow(at least for me it is) Anyone would have anxiety if they felt like this everyday, You made a comment that you can't remember the last time you
didn't have a headache.. I can relate to this.. For me I think it's been a few years. That causes me anxiety alone!! I can tell you this "I was told several times I had TMJ" and I thought nothing of it, After doing research I am begining to second guess myself. I agree TMJ and Inner ear disorders have ALOT of similar symptoms and that's what makes me second guess all this, but what I am stuck on is how can an ear infection from years ago cause me to continue to have so many symptoms? Is it possiable there is permanent damage? I don't know. I have been to the Doctor's several times with no true answers and now I am researching myself trying to get some feed back on different area's of intrest. That is how I stumbled across your message! I am thinking another Doctor's appointment for me is needed to start the process of elimination between TMJ or Inner ear to many years and to many wonderful things are being missed out on from me feeling like this. I am wondering I have a few questions for you as well. When you said your balance isn't well these days do you mean you feel like I do a vertigo/motion on a boat/swaying sensation or do you feel vertigo/spinning sensation? Do you notice if it's worse when standing then laying down? Do you have any jaw crackling or popping sounds when open and closing your mouth ti indicate possiable tmj? Have the Doctors given you any ideas as to what it may be?
I can you this so far I KNOW I have some kind of tmj, but whether or not that is the cause of all this... I JUST don't know. For all I know I could have a combination of both! If I find an answer I will be sure to let you know, until then I will keep searching for answers along with finding comfort, and give comfort to others who suffer the same as I do.
If you would like to follow up with me on this post feel free! I have found alot of interesting articles along the way. Boxerlover

That is the perfect way to describe it! It feels exactly like swaying on a boat. You know that feeling you get when you have had a lot to drink and then you go and lay down and the room spins? This is how I often feel too (The funny thing is I rarely ever drink!) and this doesn't seem to occur when I'm laying down. Its only happens when upright and standing. Sometimes when Im standing still on the spot I can completely lose my balance and this happens quite often!

In regards to the jaw cracking/popping sounds I have never really experienced any of this, the only prob I ever really have with my jaw is sometimes it call really ache either side at the top and its a similar aching sensation to ones I often get in my Sinuses.
I will definitly contact my doctor next week, I keep stalling at the moment but next week I will try and get this all sorted - Previously I have been given 2 different nasal sprays to try and these didn't help at all. It is obviously a lot more than just a sinus problem, I may actually print out this page as it pretty much sums up every problem in detail and then maybe this will help to get put on the right track and soon all will be fixed. I can only hope eh - fingers crossed and all that. I shall let you know how it goes with the doc and report back.

EDIT: Oh and I was also going to ask you, do you drive boxerlover? If so does this have much effect on your driving? I dont drive yet but was planning to learn sometime in the near future... I dont know if I would be safe on the road though like this though lol.

Hi Tito
Oh how well I know that "had alot to drink feeling", without the drinking of course! I also find that laying down is my most comfortable postion, I hardly
ever feel this if I am laying down, that's the strange thing! I also was given the nasal sprays and they did nothing for me to. When I FIRST started having this so called tmj problem mine was alot like you said just an ache or tension feeling in that area, which has now turned into the clicking and popping. I do drive, and there are days I don't attempt this expecially if I am having a BAD day of symptoms, and I find now that if I do drive my distance is limited in fear that I will have a dizzy attack! So once again all these symptoms are limiting me from enjoying life so to speak! I am glad I was able to explain better the boat/rocking/swaying sensation. You can now pass that along to the doctor! MY FINGERS are crossed and I will be waiting to hear from you. Hopefully we can both get this sorted out in the near future, In the mean time compare notes and find comfort in knowing you are not alone in this and neither am I! I will keep you updated as well. Boxerlover

Re: Lightheadedness/pressure in ears

Hey BoxerLover

I have finally been to see my Doctor! I was hoping to have a 10-15 minute chat with her to fully explain everything, but that wasn't the case. My appointment was at 17:10 but it was delayed 40 minutes and they close at 18:00 so it all seemed rushed and she more than likely had more people to fit in after me, before the end of the day! I tried to explain everything the best I could in the little time I had and I think we got off on the right track, as my previous doctor didn't actually have a clue (the only response he would give me is "hmmmmmmm")

This doc did actually suggest a number of things that could be a possibility such as: TMJ, Labyrinthitis & Rhinitis she then told me about how a nasal spray might help the problem ZzzzZzz. I informed her that the 2 nasal sprays I had been given in the past didn't actually help at all, but apparently the one she has just prescribed me 'AZELASTINE' is a lot stronger than the previous 2 and if it didn't help I should come back and see her.

Fingers crossed the spray WILL work but im not gonna count my chickens! It is very tiresome to keep going back to the doctors and feel like your not getting anywhere, but if this 3rd spray doesn't work I will be turning up there every week until I am fixed as these headaches and all the other symptoms are driving me absaloutely craaaaazy now more than ever, and I would just love to feel normal again! So today I will go and pickup my spray from the chemist and see if its all its cracked up to be.

Anyways how is everything going with you boxer? are you ok? Give me a shout when you can!

Re: Lightheadedness/pressure in ears

Hello Boxerlover and Tito,

I want to be the third person to chime in on your conversation and your two are definately not alone. I suffer from ever symptom that you guys have posted but I beleive that my case might be a little different.

My symptoms are: 31 yr old male
-Headaches (everyday & they start at the back of my neck and move forward until I can't tolerate it anymore and pop some Ibuprofin)
-Anxiety
-Constant fatigue
-Forgetfulness like you woundn't believe
-Eyelashes falling out
-Constant neck and scalp stiffness
-Foggy head and can't concentrate at any point it seems.
-Severe lightheadedness and dizziness especially when I bend over for just a second and then see stars afterwards
-All joints popping and crackling like I have arthritis, but was ruled out with several tests. Happens when I have no movement for a few minutes
-Sensitivity to sunlight
-Dark red palms like all of my blood is in my hands
-Bruise alot easier now
-Dry and blood shot eyes

I have had several tests and blood test done to rule out all common diseases such as RA, Hyperthyroidism, and so on. Had a Brain MRI w/ contrast, Chiropractor w/ x-rays that showed that my back is poker straight with no "S" curve(problem there). Seen an ENT and did balance testing which came back normal(yeah like I believe that). But I have a deviated septum from an accident I sustained when I was 18. He said that I had a mild case of Rhinitis(No sure if that's the correct spelling).

But I have never talked to my doc about TMJ. All these symptoms started after I had a real bad head injury. I was at a Steelers game in 2004 when I stumbled out of the game at halftime and proceeded across an intersection outside of the stadium. I few Eagles were getting rowdy with me so I shouted back and then the next thing that happened was that something bearhugged me from behind and that was all I remembered till that point. About an half hour later I woke up in an Ambulance to come to find out only hours later was that it was a Ploiceman who bearhugged me and poulled me to the ground. But the reason that I was in the Ambulance was because when the cop pulled me down, before I hit the cement, the right corner of my right eye caught one of those big cement pots that they plant trees in.

So the options that I see is that maybe I need to get x-rays or an MRI on my neck or go the the doctor to see if I can get checked for TMJ.

Any thoughts are certainly welcome as I am so out of answers right now. And docs wonder why more people today are more depressed and have more severe anxiety than ever before.
