son on 2 week migraine

I too was dx with migraines in my 20's (not over 30) and it is within my family, (mother, aunts, uncles grandmother cousins etc) and now even more

unfortunatly it is in my son who was dx at 3 and is now 4. he also has acid reflus and had poor weight gain as an infant, colic and many many allergies. he is on dairy free diet to date, we have intorduced dairy at times adn everything from migraines to reflux became worse. right now he is ona 2 week migraine. he takes zoloft (reflux) and periactin for daily migraine meds. he was on that when younger to increase his appitite, but once off it that is when i noticed comlaining of stomach aches, headaches, vomiting more, wanting to sleep more you name it the classic signs. his neuro decided to try him on that since he already had taken it before to see if it helped.

i am scared with my son already experiencing them this bad, he even has vomited 4 times in the last 7 days in his sleep, he is on a strict dairy free diet, has rice milk, no processed foods everything i cook is cooked mainly for him to eat and everyone else eats what he can (there are the exceptions with my older son at times) my youngest is so wonderful about asking if foods contain dairy, or if he can have it. and he knows that i always have something for him no matter what.

i will be calling the doc next week to discuss his regression and what we can do about that. (last year he was sick with migraine on christmas how bad is that !!)

he does tend to want to continue to do what other kids are until it is to the point of major pain. he is in day care and preschool and we have a 504 plan so he will not be given anything for food that he is not allowed, as well as when he gets older he can go to nurse to sleep, take extra time for homewokr when attacks happen, or any other problems that arise. i am also notified at the first sign of him complaining or even looking like one is coming on.

anything that anyone can help wtih is appreciated, i would rather try not using more medication (even tho at times i know that is the only way)
i just feel so helpless knowing how bad he hurts adn that i have tried everything i know to help and it still is not enough, as well as i am sure you all feel the same way. but maybe i can get some info and maybe help others too

thank you so much

Re: son on 2 week migraine

Wow, that is so terrible. I am sorry he is in so much pain. Have you gotten him tested for celiac disease? This can be one of the effects of having gluten. I myself have gotten rid of it from my diet and feel great. I don't even have celiac disease even and know that gluten isn't good for anyone to eat. Also, I know that you said you do your own cooking for him. Do you happen to use anything like Splenda or other artificial sweeteners, such as asparatame instead of sugar? Not that sugar is any good at all, but these other sweeteners can cause migraines and tons of other health problems, even blindness or death. If you haven't already, get rid of all that from his diet.

Also, some of what is happening to him could be emotional. There's this emotional techique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) that could be helpful to him. Do a search for it online and read about it. It has helped me a lot.

Before I forget, if you can I recommened you read the book called Dr. Mercola's Total Health Program. You may find it really helpful and it explains about a lot of what we really should be eating and why. Hope this helps you a lot!

Re: son on 2 week migraine

Zoloft for reflux sounds quite unusual.

when he gets an attack, Phenergan can help control the nausea, and ibuprofen will help the pain, along with rest in a dark room.

he could try amitriptyline at night as a preventative

Re: son on 2 week migraine

opps my mistake zantac for reflux

i do not use any artificial sweetners, i am also prone to migraines and that intensifies them so nothing to drink that is diet, or has sweetners in it.
i also only use wildtree spices since the majority of them are safe for him (unlike many others that have direvatives of milk in them)

he was tested 2 times for celiac, both came back negative, he sees a gastro specialist which i will be also calling to get a follow up they were even surprised when the testing came back negative (they thought that was one of his weight gaining issues he had diareha (sp) since he was pratically born up until he was about 3 it started to get more formed, i also watched everything i ate due to his colic and bowel issues ( he was breastfed until he was 16 month old (longer then my first but thought that might help him)

so far today he does not have a migraine but i called the doc waiting to hear from him and spoke to his day care as wella s his teacher to inform them
problem there is he has so much fun and like to go that he tend to not tell anyone until it is too late so trying to get him to learn that when he feels a headache he needs to tell someone so they can give him med, hard for a 4 year old to comprehend.

i will talk to the doc again about the ceiac and see what he says, he is so restricted in what he is able to eat anyway it is hard sometimes to explain to him even tho i try to have anything and everything he can eat with me at all times even going to Mcd's is a hassle (never mind trying the other places adn he had eaten there before and had major problems so we stick to french fries from Mcd and the burger (sometimes the bun)

thank you for the info it helps me out
