Icepick headaches - Headaches & Migraines Message Board

Has anyone heard this term before. I have been getting a sharp pain behind my ear, it comes for a few seconds, goes and then comes again. I have had it off and on for 5 days. I though it was coming from an ear infection but the doctor said it is nerve related and gave me anti-inflamatories. I have been doing some research on the net and the Icepick headache seems to be what I have. Any comments.

i was getting sharp pains on my right side of my head in the back...for days...pain would come for seconds....every few hours...dr. didnt seem concerned...but i went to the er cause i was..they did a cat scan and it came up fine...i still have been having them although not as often and not as painful...ppl are telling me its a pinched nerve in my neck maybe...causing me pain up in my head area???

Sounds like what i get...Search Trigeminal Neuralgia and see if it fits your description.
i started a thread about it but no one responded. I know its painful..mine starts in my left temple and radiates to behind my ear and into my eye. its the worst feeling ever and i get so sick. I cant really touch my face without it to start hurting. I also notice a burning numbing feeling before the pain starts.

Have since been to another Dr for a second opinion, ear was fine and he also said it was nerve related. He gave me a script for a drug that is used by people who have fits, he said itwas a mild dose. I looked up the facts sheet for it on the internet and there was no way I was going to take that. I decided to go to a massage therapist and I told her my problems, she worked on the neck muscles and shoulder muscles and gave them a good workout. I could not beleive the difference it made. My head pain almost disappeared, I am going back to see her today for another massage before I go away for xmas. I can understand why a lot of people are turning to natural therapies and giving Dr's the flick.

I get "ice pick headaches" too. My neurologist prescribed an NSAID called Indomethacin and said that it was especially good for that particular kind of pain. It really does work well for it. He also said that it was a variation of my migraines and was not dangerous. They are really terrifying and alarming but won't hurt you. I find that when I eat pizza (I think it's the combination of mozzarella and tomato - two migraine triggers) I get this headache the next day. The longest it has lasted is a week, usually at it's worst the first couple of days. The pain can come on once every hour or so.
