Headache Problems, Seeking Advice

Anyways I get bad Migraines over the course of a week, a couple days before, during and after my period. They are annoying..and getting more so

the ONLY advice my stupid dr gave me, was to take prescription stuff for headaches *Which I am doing but I think its causing a rebound effect...so I don't wanta take it to much.* Or taking something to eliminate my time of the month (Which I don't want to do, because of the number of health effects, negative, such meds can have on someone.)

ANYWAYS what I need help with, is this. Is there anyone who knows how to prevent these types of headaches, or anything that can relive them? Anything at all. Natural, Unnatural, Things I can do, Maybe there are certain things one can eat or drink to help?

Or if there is any food I should avoid at this time of the month? Any help would be appricated...

Right now... Bayer works a little, the Prescription stuff I take works, and Hersey's kisses.

I also should say I can't drink caffeine. Or have anything that has caffeine it it, cept for Chocolate. Anything else causes...Problems.

Are you on birth contorl pills? I found out after many years that those are what caused the migraines before my period. If you are on them maybe switching them will fix the problem.

I ended up of the years taking many drugs for my migraines. They's work for a while till my body got use to them then I had to change them. I was on Soma compound, Flexeril, Hydrocodine (sp), Valium, for the most part. Those were the ones that worked but I had to bounce back and forth between them.

No I'm not. My stupid dr seems to think they will help make the headaches go away since I have problems why on my period but I don't plan to every go on them for that. I do think it would cause problems, so Nope.

Oy...I hate taking pills for headaches, but its not like I know of anything else that helps. ;.; I'm trying to figure out if anyone knows of any other way.

Re: Headache Problems, Seeking Advice

I had severe headaches for several years and they got worse... My Dr. told me that I had masked depression , and put me on anti-depressants.( Paxil) , this pill works on pain in the body. well she was right. It did make the headaches start going away....

also , this helped tremendously.., I am a tense person. so I went to have massage therapy.., It relieved the tight muscles in my neck and shoulders. that trigger headaches..

the massage therapist, told me also. a trick when the headache starts. to massage your head, Pulling the hairs up as if to pull the hair out but dont go that far...

today I am free of headaches. but I think for sure it was the Paxil. that did it. but I stll go to massage therapy and cant tell you how much better I feel now.

toxins, in the body are carried out by massage and that could have caused headaches also...drinking purified water helps with headaches also.

I don't think my headaches are caused by that. Haha a Dr tried to put me on something for depres. once and all it did was give me headachs so I did not take them anymore. and I'm not depressed MOST of the time.

hmm trick..I'll try it and see if it works.

I sometimes get headachs outside this week, but not usualy. Maybe water would help...I dont drink enough anyways. It tastes funny to me.

AngryKitty... I've been studying hormone therapy for over a year now and have learned a lot. Migraines around your period indicate that your hormones are not in balance. There are many ways to relieve this issue and contrary to your opinion, your doctor isn't stupid in recommending birth control pills. Some women suffer from migraines when their Estradiol (one of the Estrogens) makes its sudden drop at one point your cycle. Some BCP will help to even that out so the drop doesn't happen as sharply and therefore no migraine is triggered. However, some BCPs can also cause migraines for some. When I was 18 the BCP available at that time (I'm 50 now) caused severe, head-splitting migraines.

Suggestion - find a doctor that specializes in hormones - it generally will not be an OB/GYN. Work with that doctor to determine at the various stages of your cycle whether your hormones are in balance or out of whack. If they are out of whack, hormone therapy could make a huge difference. There are safe/safer ways to use hormonal therapy, but the "how" all depends on what your own body needs. Also, if they are out of whack, you could be experiencing an issue with your ovaries, that depending on whether you've had or ever want to have children, could cause infertility.

Short of that, there are herbal approaches to balance (and yes, I have a background in that as well), but they may not provide as much relief. Let me know if you'd like to know more about that approach and I'll provide what I know.

Good luck, Jeanne

Re: Headache Problems, Seeking Advice

Also I think for sure drink more water, lay off the chocolate around your period, you may not think it's effecting you but it probably is. Stay away from sugars, nuts of any kind, and citrus. See a hormone specialist. You are probably not going to rebound on a few migraine meds. If your migraines stop after your period you are not rebounding. They would continue. Research online all the foods that you should avoid around your period. Research hormone therapy for menstrual migraines. There is a lot of information out there you just have to be willing to look.
Take care and I hope you feel great soon.
Diane
