Could it be migraine?

Recently, I've been having headaches that only hurt on one side of my head, usually the left side. I always feel much better after I go to sleep and wake up. I had another headache like this today, but I felt a little bit nauseous. Could this be a migraine?

Re: Could it be migraine?

Hi There!
I wrote a bunch on the "tension headache" thread, so whatever i don't cover here will be in there.
If the pain is based right over your eye (usually in brow - in corner part by nose) then that sounds like a migraine. It is a throbbing, piercing pain that can make you nauseaous. It also could be sinus, but if it is a sharp, throbbing pain than it is probably migraine. If it is sinus then u should feel fullness in your face or upper cheeks/eyes. Sometimes if it's sinus, it can be focused in on one side more than the other.
But if u don't have allergies and nothing is blooming big time where u live, than it's most definitely a mig.
This is what i take when i get them & it works wonders:
(2) Advil
(2) Excedrin
Either pepto-bismol or tums for nausea.
If the pain is that bad, than this should help. It is called a "Headache Cocktail" by drs. And No, it is not too much meds. to take at once. Unless u are on prescribed meds. and want to check w/that dr. to make sure its ok, than i don't see any issues in taking it. I am on 2 other different meds. and i have no issues w/taking them.
Also, lay down in dark room (very necessary) and put a cold pack on your head. You should feel better within an hour.
Good Luck!

Re: Could it be migraine?

It could be a tension headache or it could be a migraine, the symptoms are very similar. One of the classic symptoms of migraines is that they are one sided. Another symptom is nausea, but it can also be caused by a long time headache. You need to see a doc and discuss your headaches.

What would help you and your doctor is to do a little time tracking. Keep a diary of what you've eaten and drank prior to your headaches for a week or two. This will help in your diagnosis and help with your prognosis and direction of treatment.

Re: Could it be migraine?

When I get migraines (many females in my family get them) they are on one side of the head and pound. It feels like a hammer is going to my head. Sometimes I am able to sleep them off but other times I can't sleep because of the pain. Migraines often cause you to be sensitive to light or sound. They make me nauseous and if they are bad enough, I will throw up, which makes my head hurt even more. Advil Migraine was working well for me, but unfortunately it stopped working. I'm not taking Excedrin Migraine and I'm hoping it will help... I actually have one now but managed to turn it into a mild headache but still don't feel great! I'm unable to take prescription medication because I am on an anti-depressant.

Definitely try to get plenty of rest, drink enough water, try to stay away from bright or noisy areas when you feel that way. Try to find patterns why you may have gotten the migraine. I often get them for reasons: dehydrated, not enough sleep, from chocolate, or from female problems.
