Does this sound like migraines!? - Headaches & Migraines Message Board

Hi all!

My daughter has been having constant headaches since August - long story short, her doctor put her on Propanolol, and then just a few days ago, she started seeing black spots - I told her to call her doctor's office (she's 18, so they won't say much to me!) and they called her back today and told her they were going to schedule an MRI - she and I were both initially basket cases until I went on-line and googled "headaches and seeing black spots" and saw tons of info come up on migraines - I don't wish migraines on her, but I would be very relieved to know it's that and not something horrible! (ie, tumor or something like that!) -

I called my mother-in-law and 2 of my neighbors ladies, as all 3 suffer from migraines, and all 3 said they usually see black spots shortly before getting a migraine! I asked my daughter about it, and she said when she sees the black spots, she doesn't have a headache, but gets one shortly after. She also had a day at work last week when the lights were bothering her so her co-worker told her to go in the conference room for a bit (where the lights were off) I know that sensitivity to light is another symptom of migraines.

Her MRI is Thursday and we follow up with a neurologist on Wednesday of next week - any thoughts from those of you with migraines would be GREATLY appreciated!

Some people will get "auras". Which are pre signs before a migraine come. Please understand I am not a doctor in any way. But I do know about migraines. Auras can be various things...numbness, tingling, seeing spots, twitching, etc. Like me, I have 3 fingers that go numb and my upper mouth twitches before I get a migraine. Something she can do to help her is to keep a diary of anything she eats or drinks. Another diary of when spots occur and when migraines occur. Look for common factors to see if you can find the reason of the headaches. Like me, if I drink too much caffine..I get a migraine. Or if I eat too many bananas, or if I inhale lots of pollen. Also, this is a long shot here, but recently I did a friends suggestion and cut my hair--my long hair pass my tush got 12 inches cut off and now bra strap length. Anyhow, a friend had a cousin that had migraines and got her hair cut--she doesnt get migraines now. And kid you not after i cut my hair, I have noticed a MAJOR decrease in my migraines. I asked the doctors whats up with the cutting of the hair--the heavyness and bulk and thickness can trigger a bad headache, the headache can trigger to a migraine. Since my hair cut I have had 5 migraines in past 3 months...I averaged 16-20 migraines a month. Just an idea

I had migraines for years and was on Propanolol which did not work for me (sorry to hear your daughter suffered from seeing black spots, somewhat scary to experience I would think). What ended up being the root of my migraines was self-induced stress. I found that I wasn't making any time for myself to decompress and was less than organized in everything I did. I would suggest that your daughter try to do everything she can in a natural way before taking the medication route as it sounds like she's had some terrible side affects. Best of luck.

Hi Ronnie!

How did you find out that self-induced stress was the source of your migraines? Did you ever have an MRI? My daughter had one today, and of course, I am so impatient to hear back - they said no news is good news - still, I can't help but worry!

I used to suffer from a lot of migraines, and I would usually see ameoba like structures floating off to the side of my peripheral vision.

The funny thing was that sometimes they would happen prior to the onset of a migraine, and sometimes they would happen in isolation without the migraine onset. My nuerologist said that this can happen.

I also had my eyes checked and they were fine.

I was on amitriptyline for years to control the migraines, and while the medicine helped, it did not entirely stop them. If I missed a dose it would definately trigger a really bad migraine.
