Chronic Pressure at the base of skull and neck

I have had headaches my entire life, however, the problem I am most concerned with presently is an increasing amount of pressure at the base of my skull and in my neck. It increases in severity the more that I move around. It is present when I wake up in the mornings, but it is more of an annoyance, but as I go through the day, it gets progressively worse. By the time 5 in the afternoon comes, each step I take and every time I move my head, it feels like the back of my head is being shot off with a shot gun. The main way to get rid of the pain, NO MOVEMENT! It is hard to do because it hurts to even lay my head on my pillow. Because I have had headaches for so long, I cannot find a doctor to address this issue and I am worried that I may become disabled or worse. Help!!!!

Talking Re: Chronic Pressure at the base of skull and neck

Hi- You sound exactly the same as me. I've had headaches for about 17yrs but about 7yrs ago this pain at the base of my skull started. I'm a single mom and this has changed my whole life. I don't go out hardly at all cause I'm always in some degree of pain. The bad days are REALLY bad. Been to many, many Dr.s but all say migraine and this is NOT migraine!!!! It feels like a nerve pain of some sort. Unless its really bad I can hold my head still and don't feel it but if I turn my head it's like a nervy pain. And yes, even laying down does not help. Neurologist just recently took me off the Ibuprofen and fiorecet that I was on , saying that my pain was from MOH (aka rebound headaches). Did not take this pain away. So now I can't take anything for pain and I'm still in pain!!! Great huh?! But even that stuff never totally helped anyway. Going to a new PCP this week and I'm going to ask for a nerve conduction test. I can't continue to live like this so I will find someone to fix it and not just try to medicate something that's it's not. I feel like a terrible mom!! I'm sorry I'm rambling but I'm excited to talk to someone who understands this!!!! Please write back. Hope to hear from you. Amy

Re: Chronic Pressure at the base of skull and neck

Me too Nicole and Absmom.
Can I join your club? Exactly the same, and it wasnt until recently, when I started throwing up from the pain that they would even do an x-ray. Now another x-ray, CT and MRI later and they've found problems in my lower back but nothing to explain the feeling of being hit in the back of the head with an axe. I see the specialist again on friday, I'll let you know how that goes.
Hey if nothing else, Its good to know I'm not the only one. Thanku :-)

Be sure to have them check for Chiari 1 malformation ~ my son has it and I am being tested for it. Some docs miss it if they arent experienced in it. ((hugs)) hope you feel better soon! An MRI is the only way to detect it ~

Re: Chronic Pressure at the base of skull and neck

I have the same pain. I have been through tests and blood work. Recently went to Pain managment. I have 3 bulging disc in my cervical spine. I had an epidural steroid injection done on 5/5, which did nothing for my pain. The PM said that my headaches could be caused by the greater occipital nerve. Is the back of your head sore to the touch? If so, this could be your problem too. They can do a nerve block directly into that nerve. Apparently if this is your cause, you will feel immediate relief.

My muscles on right side of neck and head are tight the muscles into the head feel like tight bones its not bones its the muscles inside head a dr gave me shots in my head did nothing I have had several epidural injections I am on my last one I go Monday now for 3 weeks I have been dizzy and am still dizzy I had a ct scan it was ok I am dizzy because of back and neck tightness I really need help the drs just do the same thing and nothing works I was told its occipital neuralgia, then a pinched nerve, then arthritis there is not enough room in my neck and it pinches on a nerve which causes irritation no one said anything about a nerve block, I get some relief from the shot is a nerve block a permanent thing? Maybe its because of the arthritis no two drs agree on the same thing. I go to Hershey MC but not until June 24th I need a PROPER diagnosis and help
