Question Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

I have posted 2 other places and can't seem to get any response at all so maybe third times a charm. For about 3 weeks I have had a sever headache and nausa and vomiting. A week after all this started on a unrelated note I want in for a routine eye exam and was told the optic nerve in my right eye was swollen and was refered to a retna specialist. After seeing the retna specialist I have had an MRI ordered witch I go to get on the 20 and then back to the specialist on the 23. He did say i had some visual field loss. I have been to the ER twice for my headache witch I keep getting told they can't tell me what's wrong but the can make me feel better at least. Not even the specialist gave me any clue and wouldn't confirm the headache and vomiting were connected to the optic nerve swelling. I am at my wits end and just getting tired of having to take pain medicine all the time and can't really live my normal life. If anyone has any similar storie please share. It would be highly appercepted. The headaches are getting more server and I just want some answers. Thanks in advance

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

Has anyone said anything about maybe migraines? Also, I do know if you are taking or being given too much of the pain medicines, they can cause rebound headaches, that are just as bad and sometimes worse than a migraine...Also, an EEG might be another thing to check, it's more or less an x-ray of your brain, it could be some sort of or even may be seizures of some sort...I've got migraines and I've been given to many pain meds or too high of a dosage, also, both of my daughters have migraines, but my oldest was having some problems and they wound up finally doing an EEG and found she was having seizures...Just some thoughts...I hope you find some answers and get to feeling better soon...

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

Thanks for the reply. I was told when I was younger that I do get migraines. But they were never this painfull or long lasting. Every women in my family has had migraines from my mom, aunts and grandmother. This is different. Funny you would mention seizures. My older sister recently had a small seizure and has been having test done for about 2 months. We have yet to find anything out. The thing that worrys me is the headache is not letting up. When I do get headache they usually decrease in intensity but this one is still going strong. When I went to see the retna specialist I asked if the swollen optic nerve an headaches could be related and of course he could not say for sure. At my scound ER vist they told me they couldn't tell me what was wrong but they could help treat it. They gave me some new medicine and at first was giving me some relef but not is only taking the edge off so to speak. My MRI is on Tuesday an then they want me to have a spinal tap done if the MRI is clear. But this just dosent feel like a normal migraine I have had in the past.

Well, I too have had migraines all my life and they got way worse about 8-9 years ago, so bad, that I lost my job and Thank God I got on disability due to the migraines...There are migraines throughout my whole family, on my moms side and dads side, and unfortuantly, my 2 daughters have them too, I sure was hoping and praying they wouldn't get that curse...I hope that you find some answers, please keep in touch and let me know if anything changes with your migraines or if anything comes up on the tests you have...I hope they either find something or they can at lease help you some...

Thank you. My hope is that the MRI will come back normal as well as the spinal tap and they will just treat the swollen optic nerve and the symptoms will go away. I will post after I recive the MRI results. I go Tuesday to get the test but I'm pretty sure I will have to wait tell I go back to the specialist to recive the results witch will be Friday. In the mean time any advice on how to deal with the pain in my head? Anything that has helped with your migraines?

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

Well, my neurologist just put me on generic Triptan (as a preventive), will let you know in the next few months if it helps or not...He also has me taken *as needed with migraines* 1 generic Imitrex (a second 1 if needed an hour later) or 4-6 Aleve every 6-8 hours, 2 generic Phenergan 25mg every 6-8 hours or 2 generic Reglan 10mg every 6-8 hours, 4 Benadryl every 4-6 hours, 2 Tizanidine 4mg every 6-8 hours...That's not to mention the other meds my family doctor has me on for other health issues...I have found what works the best after many meds throughout the years is what the doctors call a cocktail---Toradol, Phenerghan or Zofran *Usaually, these are given to me by shot* Hope some of this helps you some... If I didn't mention it, make sure you are not taking or being injected with pain meds for a longer period than a day or 2, this can cause "rebound headaches" and they can be just as bad if not sometimes worse than the migraine, and there are no drugs to help with them, as a matter of fact, you have to go without any drugs for a few days or longer...

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

Also, the longest and worst one I've ever had in my life was back a few years ago, it lasted for 13 days, the nausea/vomiting and the pain, it's so hard to describe, because it was so horrible, I wouldn't wish migraines on my worst enemy muchless anyone else...I did and do notice, that if my hormones are off, too low, the migraines seem to be more frequent...

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

Well the only time I have had major pain killers is in the ER and they only give me one dose and then send me home. I only take they prescription ones at night because I work durning the day and that's the hardest. No working is not an option right now because I am a single mom but I am frequently going to the back office at work to sit down and rest due to the pain so its almost likebim not doing any work at all and I can not take the prescription pulls there. It's to the point where can can't ever take care of my 3 year old by myself. I lay in bed most of the day and try to get up so that im not to sleeping to much but that seems its all I can do. I have already missed several days of work and have used up all my sick time so I'm left with having to suffer there the pain or lose my job. That is a lot of medicine you are taking! I'm sey to hear that there that bad for you. This is the 25th day for me. My last ER visit they did give me some medicine for general swelling and I'm hope that my hell in some way an I am convinced it's all related to my swollen optic nerve and hope once that's treated this will be resolved. The only medicine I have been give so far is tylonal 3s and fioricet so nothing to heavy so I'm positive it's not the rebound headache witch I have had before after getting over colds and sinus stuf.

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

I hate to hear that about your optic nerve, but I do hope that is the answer and they can fix it and fix it soon...I understand about the single parent too...There are days that I feel alright or even good, and wish I was at work or could work, but all the doctors I have gone to, told me that they feel like all the stress work causes along with all the stress issues I'm dealing with in life in general and then I stress out about all my health issues (I know my child that is still home and my husband get sick and tired of my not feeling well or having to go to doctors, but I wish I could do something about it, because I know I'm more sick of it than anyone)... If you don't mind me asking, what state are you in? Just curious, I'm in Tennessee, I've lived in Mississippi and some of the surrounding states... Keep me updated on how you are...

Ok...I was hoping you were in this state or close to this state, I was going to give you some doctors names, that wouldn't make you feel like you were or are getting yanked around...

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

Had my MRI this morning. Gonna try and call the doctor tomarrow and get the results but prolly gonna have to wait tell I see him on Friday. I appreciate that. At this point I only feel like I have been yanked around by the ER I have visited but so fare the doctor seems to be doing what is suppose to be done from stud I have read on the Internet. Now all there is left to do is wait and hope for the best. I do plan after all this is over if something is not found to go a a doctor about migraines and many see about getting them treated.

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

KMH1090,
Hope all comes out well with the MRI, you're right, you probably won't know anything from it until you go back to that doctor or for a couple of days and they call you...Yea, a lot of doctors/ER's will make you feel that way for sure, been there, done that, it sucks!!! If you do or don't find something on MRI, depending on what it turns out, you definitely need to find out what is going on and you may have to have other tests ran to find any answers...I wish you luck with everything and hope you get some help, please keep me posted...

Re: Headache, nausea and vomiting 3 weeks and counting?

KMH1090,
I'm glad that the MRI came back normal, but now you have to see if you can find a good neurologist, and not sure if I've mentioned this, but ask the neurologist if you can get an EEG, just to make sure there is nothing hiding...It may be just stress or tension or just regular migraines...Thank you for keeping me posted...
