insurance options? unemployed student... please help! - Health Insurance Issues Message Board

Hello out there... I am currently unemployed, going back to college full-time in California.
I bought insurance through the college, which is okay, but does not cover dental, allergies and vision... of course, pre-existing conditions are not covered. AND it does NOT cover preventive care. I cannot go on Medi-Cal, I don't think because I will qualify. What are my choices? Blue Shield rejected me, because of my current sinus problems. I do not want to pay an outrageous amount, but I am willing to pay a decent amount for good insurance. I do want vision, allergies, and pre-existing conditions covered.
And I do want decent coverage. What insurance do you suggest for me?

Hi! Oftentimes while in college, the healthplan that your parent(s) have eligibility under will also insure their college students up to a certain age, usually up to age 22. Medi-Cal will also insure young people ages 21 and under. Are these options for you?

Thanks for the suggestions, but no, I am a re-entry student (changing careers), so I'm afraid I'm much older than that. Thanks!

Well good for you! So glad to hear that you are returning back to school! Unfortunately, I am unaware of any further info. Good luck to you. Hopefully after your graduation, you'll get that great job with benefits. Hope until then you are able to find some coverage that is affordable. I'm wondering if an insurance agent would be able to find something reasonable for you? I would talk to several until you find one who quotes a good premium for a decent plan.

I can understand what you are going through. Like you, I was an older student going back to college and my parents insurance plan had long ran out. The only thing that I can recommend is see if you can get prorated service by your local hospital. Also, if you have an existing health problem, you may want to see if that hospital has clinical trials going.
