insurance won't cover ultrasounds....

has anyone heard of an insurance company that won't cover a routine ultrasound in pregnancy? i'm hoping that i'm reading the policy wrong, because aren't ultrasounds kind of standard to rule out certain problems in pregnancy???

Re: insurance won't cover ultrasounds....

Hey--
There are a whole lot of insurance companies now that don't cover maternity care at all--- unless the mother has a genuine medical emergency as part of the pregnancy (ie: she needs an emergency C section). Most plans still cover maternity care though. The plans that don't are usually individual insurance plans (ie plans not provided by an employer) that were sold to young women.
I hope this helps!

Re: insurance won't cover ultrasounds....

Did you get an actual denial? Usually all maternity care, visits, ultrasounds, etc., are covered at the end of the pregnancy when the provider bills a global code representing all those services. If for some reason your doctor's office tried to submit the ultrasound bill separately (it happens), then the insurance company may have denied it as being included in that global fee, which they'll pay at the end of the pregnancy. Call them up and ask them--if you haven't been getting bills for any of your other treatment, that's more than likely the case.

Though as anng45 said, some plans don't cover maternity without an additional rider...best check into that now before the baby gets here.

I don't know about health insurance not covering U/S's however I do know from personal experience that u/s's do uncover medical issues that can be potentially life threatening to the mother and the child. I agree, better check it out now. Personally, even if my insurance didn't pay, I'd pay out of pocket for one if I had to. I've heard of people paying to have an extra one done just to determine the babies gender, so it doesn't seem like it would be prohibitively expensive. (I'm not talking about rich people either.)
