Since you are in California there are two types of COBRA regular COBRA & CAL-COBRA which is mandated by the state. You need to talk with the benefits coordinator at your job and let them know in writing that you want to take advantage of COBRA/CAL-COBRA. There are some pretty strict time limits for how long you have to inform them you want it when you leave your job.
Also, be aware that they may be obligated to offer it to you, but they can legally charge you more than you were paying when you had the coverage through your employer so it can be pretty costly.
