Ssi Back Pay For Children (dedicated Account)

My daughter was approved for ssi threw a judge with no lawyer. I received a phone call today saying that i have to use this money for her disability only and i have to open a dedicated account. She is bipolar I asked if i could use the money to keep a house over her head. They said no the back pay is only used for her disability she could not tell me what i can use this money for that she would not need a wheel chair, ect ect. Because bipolar is just a mental disorder and her medication is already paid. I said to her so you are telling me that her money will just sit in this account because i can't use it for stuff like electric bill, phone to call the doctor she said no just her disability at least i am using it to take care of her. I have to keep all records when i take the money out and show what i used it for. Did anyone ever hear of a dedicated account and i am only getting it in 3 installments. And the installments are not that much. Thank you for any replys about this issue it would be very helpful.

Yea, it a new thing they just started a few years back. from what I understand they are doing it b/c the fact is parents of children SSI would use the money for themselves and not for the disabled child. But you can use the money to buy clothes for your child, pay for camp for her, pay for gas to take her to the doctor, school (most ppl with BP have anxiety) supplies for her, (I have BP and I have a light box). Also, if there is a program that state medicaide will not pay for you can use it for that. My little girl as aspergers, and when she was collecting SSI, I sent her to a special camp for kids with AS. She also had a speech delay, I was able to buy her an computer with lot's of speech software. I do not know how old your girl is, but you can buy books, drawing paper, journals (to keep track of her moods) but you have to tie it to her bipolar disorder. They all have to be written out in checks with all your recpcits
They was SSA sees it, it your job anyway to provide food, shelter, lights etc!
besides if she is getting SSI she may be able to get food stamps also.
if you look on the SSA website, click understanding SSI, and go to SSI for children they have it all there.

Some bad apples make it bad for everyone else!
good luck
Lynn

Re: Ssi Back Pay For Children (dedicated Account)

Thank you for your replys on this issue. First my daughter is 9 she is going to camp this summer but her insurance pays for it. And more about me i am not well my self in march i had my armpit removed because i had staph infection really bad when i came home i still did not fill well i went back to my doctor to find out i had MRSA (SUPERBUG) and my arm is still opened alittle will not heal. I am on 13 medications. I don't want to live like this i want to be part of society and work but i can't due to my illnesses. I didn't have enough work credits to receive SSD. So i was approved for SSI it it is enough to pay the rent and where I live there is no apartments that have section 8. I moved in a doublewide and we have to pay rent, mortage, and property tax's, I moved in with my parents that didn't work out because my dad got very sick he passed away March 20th 2008 the day I had surgery, I moved in to a friends house that didn't work because she had 40 cats and the smell was not good for my children thats why i moved in this. So it has not been easy for my children or I. My son was on home bound all school year and i was running him to school 3 x's aweek and with the gas prices going up that didn't help me. I don't want any pity from anyone but trying to live its been very hard.
But again thank you for your inputs I guess they would rather have us on the streets and living in are car then let us pay the bills that need to be paid.

Re: Ssi Back Pay For Children (dedicated Account)

We live in West Virginia and my son also just got approved for SSI. It took almost 2 years and now I also have to open a dedicated account for him. Social security told me that I am not allowed to touch his money at all. If he needs something then I have to write them a letter requesting what he needs and how much it costs then if they feel he needs it then they will allow me so much money to buy it. How do they know what my son needs??? They don't live with him or care for him I do. They said if I use the money then I will have to pay it back and they will take away me as payee. I live on disability so I need all the help I can get. My son told me to give them back there money they obviously need it more then him. Help please!!! Oh and by the way they say he can't even use it when he turns 18.

I've never heard of something so preposterous. Yes, you have to maintain a dedicated acct and yes, you have to spend it only on your child's needs, such as clothes, activities, and etc. But to get "approval" first....I've never heard of that before. Hopefully, someone else will chime in with some feedback / advice.

Ex

I understand that I have to use the money for my son and thats really not my problem I just don't understand why social security says I have to have prior approval I don't feel thats right what if he has a need that arises imediatly and costs more than his monthly benifits?? Then I will have to wait until social security says I can take care of his needs. My son is ADHD and Bipolar and has degenerative bone diesise which weakens his muscles. Thanks to every one for the help. Maybe someone will have an idea about this prior approval thing.

if the need arrises , contact your local Social Security . or go down to the SS office as soon as poosible, so you can be approved for your child beforehand.

Re: Ssi Back Pay For Children (dedicated Account)

My daughter, who has (SCD) Sickle Cell Disease, and was just approved for disability after 4 years, received her first back payment in November and is in the process of receiving her second installment in May is experiencing the exact same thing. I just go and get what I need out of the account. Yes it is used appropriately, strictly towards rehabilitation accessories. I too, do not have a vehicle. If I donít get my child to the hospital while she is having a crisis, she can die within a matter of minutes. Well I asked for an extended amount of money prior to getting the first installment to purchase a vehicle. One representative asked me to get an estimate under ten thousand, it depends on one total lump sum amount, in an effort for it to be approved. The manager denied it, but indicated that the doctor would have to provide a letter indicating that such transportation was necessary, because I could catch a train, bus, cab etcÖ I began calling his supervisor, his supervisorís supervisor. Overall, they longer wanted to deal with me. Therefore, they sent her account to the county in which we used to live in. We are currently in ATL. To say the lest, her money was released but only for the basic because the hematologist was out of town and I was only provided 72 hrs to complete the form. I spoke with a representative two days ago in an effort to send a copy of my receipts so that she may receive her second disbursement. I was told to just hold on them in case I was selected to send in a yearly summary of how I spent her back pay. It is unfortunate that the system is restricted due irresponsible parents who choose to take the childrenís money and do everything except use it towards that disabled child. They make it extremely impossible for needy families. Life can throw you many curve balls. Prior to my daughter being diagnosed, I was a school teacher and a part-time juvenile cop. I do have a Masterís degree and can regroup. More than anything, I have absolute faith in God and restoration. What about the families who have such a setback and canít rebound? Are they to continue to live below this poverty level in an effort to attempt to make provision for their household?

my son(he is 16) is bipolar and has learning disabilities....i opened up the dedicated account in january, they deposited $1,900 in this account.....i bought him clothes, paid utilities, bought groceries, etc.....now they are saying i have to repay the 1900(because i misused the money by buying clothes, food, ect for him).....i just got a call the other day from the ss and they are saying i need to open up another account(the other one was closed due to no funds being deposited in it) so they can deposit the 16,000 back pay in it...but the only thing i can spend it on is medical(which he is on medicaid) schooling or job training....and that is it...the lady i talked to was real firm about that....i also was supposed to get the installments like you and the only installment we got so far was the 1900 and now all the sudden i have to have this account open so they can put the 16,000 in it....i am confused about this all....if you think about it the back pay is actually monthly checks(which u can use for utlilities, clothing, food, etc) which are accumulated over the time from which you applied....so why are they saying it can only be used for medical and schooling? if you find out anythin about this please let me know also......thanx

Re: Ssi Back Pay For Children (dedicated Account)

I do not know when the dedicated accounts started for children on SSI? My son recieved SSI in 97' up to 06 ' Until he was placed on my record , when I became fully disabled.
When he turns 18 in 2 years I have to refile all over again for him , for him to go back on his own SSI .
I'll I had to do was fill out reports how the SSI money was spent, or if any of it was saved. I did not have to deal with a dedicated account or anything . With his disabilites, his claim is approved quickly though.

this is what i was told they was going back to because of all the children being signed up. they used to do this and its not for maintenance items such as food, lights, its to pay for there disability needs not someones light bill

Re: Ssi Back Pay For Children (dedicated Account)

I have not found any good information on opening a dedicated account for my child and what to do on the net. Anyone have any informative links on exactly what you have to do and how to go about opening a dedicated account?
Will I be able to withdraw funds right away for the childs needs or do I have to contact SSI and go through a process/rigmarole? After 200 searches I still haven't found a concrete answer to the last question. After all, I am the representative payee, why would I need approval and extra waiting time?
Re: Ssi Back Pay For Children (dedicated Account)

Have you found any information on whether you have to get pre-approval to withdraw funds from a dedicated account as I am the father of an autistic child on SSI. I really need to know this because it seems that everything needs to be planned out way ahead of time if you do need approval. I have not found any resources on the web to either justify or refute the claim you replied on in the dedicated accounts thread.
