can someone explain primary and secondary insurance?

Hi all. That sounds like a stupid question, but I actually have one, related to this. I have always used my husbands insurance and its EXCELLENT. My docs all know where to bill, etc. I have a chronic condition and have some expensive medical docs and prescriptions.

Im going to be getting my own insurance thru work soon. Its not as good. The dedudibles are higher- the co payments double what Im used to. Do I have to use this insurance? Or can I continue using my husbands? Do I even have to admit to having this second plan?

If I DO have to admit to having it, can it be secondary, even though its MINE thru my employer? Or Can I continue to use his as primary and make mine secondary?

Can anyone explain this to me?

Thanks.

Re: can someone explain primary and secondary insurance?

Are you paying for your insurance thru your job? Do you have to take it? I would think you don't need it if you can continue to be covered so well by your husband's insurance plan.

Can you opt out of your plan without penalty? Can you opt back in if your husband's insurance should become less useful?

If you have to take your option at work or lose it, all you have to find out is whether it can be used as a secondary to pay co-pays and deductibles on your husband's plan: contact your HR office or representative, they can usually answer your questions.

I believe you do have to disclose both insurance plans if you have any major issues pop up healthwise; at that point you may be glad you have both. But if you say your husband's plan is excellent, then I would just look at both policies carefully and see which one would give you the best coverage in case of a catastropic illness.

Check with your HR, ok?

Re: can someone explain primary and secondary insurance?

The reason Im asking is I plan on leaving my husband in the next 2 months....when we are divorced, I will no longer have insurance, and due to my preexisting condition, I have to wait a year for this coverage to cover preexisting things. My meds are 3000$ a month, my specialists are seen monthly- I realize that during the first few months, when my husband is still covering me (probably up to the divorce, and Im aware that I can take COBRA option until my own coverage kicks in for the preexisting coverage) I wondered during the first few months, do I have to use my insurance as primary.

I cant talk to my HR person because I havent disclosed my illness. I dont trust her at all.

IS there another way to find out what is legal and what isnt?

thanks.

Re: can someone explain primary and secondary insurance?

If the coverage is through your employer you cannot choose which will be primary, yours will automatically be primary since you are the employee. If there is a pre existing clause on your policy you can obtain a certificate of credible coverage from your husband's insurance company and that should waive the pre existing clause all together or shorten the amount of time based on how long you have been covered under your spouse's plan.

Re: can someone explain primary and secondary insurance?

thank you for your reply. It doesnt quite seem fair, since my husband has the MUCH lower deductible, lower copays, etc; however, since divorce is imminent, I figure I need to join now, while its open enrollment. Thank you for your explanation-
