In between jobs, no health insurance for 2 weeks?

My husband is leaving his job on Dec. 16 and his new job will start on Jan. 4. His old company told him his benefits end on his last day (we thought they would go to the end of the month). You cannot get Cobra for only 2 weeks, you have to purchase it for an entire month, and we don't need it for that long.

Do anyone know of any program that allows families to purchase insurance for a couple weeks? We have a 3 year old son. What if something were to happen to him? Is there anything we can do???

Re: In between jobs, no health insurance for 2 weeks?

You really should just buy the cobra and be assured of continuous coverage.

You can buy those kind of "bridge" policies but they are really awfully difficult to deal with when you have a claim. They are another case of "the cheap is the expensive" or "penny wise and pound foolish".

I agree, buy the one month of Cobra. If you go to apply for short term medical, it's bound to be more of a pain than just paying for one month of Cobra, and with Cobra you cannot be turned down for coverage.

Re: In between jobs, no health insurance for 2 weeks?

I agree. First, COBRA will be easy to start. Individual health insurance may require full underwriting which can include medical records, questionnaire completion and a mini med exam if needed. Second, employer based health insurance is "group insurance". COBRA will also qualify as "group insurance". If you go from one group insurance plan to another there is no pre-ex. You just have to keep any notification of credible coverage you receive from his prior health insurance carrier should the new carrier ever want proof.

Get one month of COBRA and when he starts his new job have him find out what date his health insurance begins with the new employer. Some employers don't start medical insurance until the employee has completed 30, 60, 90 days of employment. So before you stop paying for COBRA be sure you have your new health insurance cards in your hands.

Re: In between jobs, no health insurance for 2 weeks?

My husband's new health insurance will start on day one of his job.

The COBRA is going to cost us about $800 to cover our family - for just 2 weeks! YIKES!

Think of it this way - one case of appendicitis or a broken bone that requires surgery will cost you thousands. I know it's tough but it's the easiest and bes way to know you are covered.

I assume your husband voluntarily left his job? The reason I ask is the COBRA rate is subsidized for employees who loose coverage involuntarily.

Re: In between jobs, no health insurance for 2 weeks?

Is it possible that his current employer would allow you to pay the two weeks of the group premium ?

Re: In between jobs, no health insurance for 2 weeks?

The policy end date is based on the actual medical policy document. If the employer chose "last day of employment" as the coverage end date for the policy it must be administered the same for every employee (in order to avoid any unfair employment practices).

Re: In between jobs, no health insurance for 2 weeks?

ruffled, I am going to see if the new job would allow us early coverage. He is leaving his job voluntarily - he got a better offer with a new company. Thanks for your help everyone.

Re: In between jobs, no health insurance for 2 weeks?

Under HIPAA, as long as there is gap of less than 62 days between "group" medical coverages (group refers to coverage via an employer) then the new carrier can not subject you to Pre-Ex. And with COBRA you have 60 days to make the election. So I recommend having the form ready to go and should anyone in the family need care in the 14 day period then you immediately send in the COBRA election form accompanied by a check. The side that tjlhb noted is an excellent source of information on this topic.
