Question about getting blood test without insurance

I am a 24 yr old male and I think I have low testosterone. After reading a lot about the issue, I almost have self diagnosed myself, but I still want a blood test to be certain.

I do not have insurance, so I would pay for it myself. Now if I pay for the test, and it comes back that I have low testosterone, I would have to get on testosterone therapy, which is somewhat expensive and I would rather get insurance to pay for the therapy.

So do I get insurance first, then go for my tests, or do I get the test now, and see what the results are?

Would insurance pay for the tests if I go to the Dr. right after I get new insurance?

If I paid for the test myself and then got insurance, would insurance cover future testosterone therapy or would they say that I have a pre-existing condition?

Thanks for your advice.

Re: Question about getting blood test without insurance

It would be a pre-existing condition if that last scenario played out. Get the insurance first. Then go have a physical and get all blood work done then you'll know where you stand.

Re: Question about getting blood test without insurance

You need insurance even if you don't have a testosterone problem. You are one accident or illness away from being financially in debt for decades. My husband had a co-worker who opted out of the insurance and got a cold which became bronchitis which became double pneumonia and 10 days in the hospital. Now she's wondering how to come up with the $60,000 she now owes (and all the bills aren't in yet).

Given your age LowT is unlikely, but possible. So if you test first, as was said, anything that comes back as abnormal is then pre-existing.
