I have a 9 year old dd who has just been diagnosed with oppsitional defiant disorder. We have a long road ahead of us with intensive therapy. Is it likley that she might qualify for ssi benefits? I know people with mental health issues and children with mental health issues can get them. I'm just wondering. THank you.

SSI in the case of a child is based on the family's income along with her meeting the criteria of disability as a child. You can use on of the many online calculators to see if your family meets the income limits. If you do then the only way to find out for sure if she falls under any of the criteria for a disabled child is to apply for her and go through the process. Even if income wise you do not qualify do not forget that at 18 you can apply for her as an adult when family income is no longer counted.

I guess what I'm asking is does her disability alone qaulify for ssi? Can children with mental health issues get ssi? Is that enough to qualify? THanks.

I have heard of children getting SS for mental health conditions. I don't know specifically about ODD.

While children can qualify for SSI who only have a mental health issues no one from a forum such as this can tell you she will qualify for certain. All types of mental health issues have varying degrees from those who can barely function to those who do well with medications. The only thing you can do is apply go through the process and see if she meets the criteria for her illness. If you feel she has any chance at all then you should apply for her as if she is approved now it speeds up the entire process when she turns 18.
