What the heck happened?

The first part of nov. I'm living life, working, doing alright, having fun. Nov 7 My feet go to sleep and never wake up. Thinking its a pinched nerve, not feeling like I can work the next day, I go to the ER. They rush me in like I'm having a stroke, kinda scare me, cat scan, no stroke. Ok, now my feet, left leg, left buttock, and thumb and 2 fingers on left arm are numb. They admit me give me mri with contrast, they think maybe tumor. Next day neuro comes in, they dont think its a tumor but They need to run more test and they want to start steriods to see if that helps. A bunch of blood test, 3 more mri's with contrast and 6 days of steriods (which didnt help much with the numbness) They send me shuffling out with follow up appt. with neuro ms dr. Nov 29 appt, doc said you have many lesions on your spine and brain, you have ms and are disabled and told me to go to social security and get disablity, she even gave me a note. I dont think I mentioned no insurance. Sooo now what!!! No work=no money. I'm a single mom with very little income, great family, wonderful sweetie, best parents ever! But feeling like Ive lost my independence, and I dont wanna' be a burden, and I really dont want drain my parent savings, that would break my heart. Please some advice, how do people make it when they can't work?

Re: What the heck happened?

Welcome.

Depending on the state in which you reside, you might be eligible for workers comp until SSDI kicks in. You need to apply for SSDI ASAP. You can go to their website and download the information you need to file a claim for MS.

Explain your situation to the case manager SSA assigns to you and they might be able to arrange SSI until your SSDI kicks in.

If you are approved, your first payment arrives the 6th from the date of approval. It will include monies for you and for any children in your care who are not getting child support. This child benefit will continue until the child has reached 18. There is a maximum child benefit and it is divided among the qualifying children and deposited in their accounts each month. As each child reaches 18, the remaining monies are divided among the remaining children until the last child turns 18 and all the child benefits end.

You will be eligible for Medicare. Unfortunately, your kids will not and you will need to contact your state social services about their insurance program for children. You can get this coverage within a week to 10 days here in Kansas and it covers medical and dental as well as any vaccinations. SSDI income usually pushes you out of the food stamp qualifications, but I would encourage you to check your local churches for food assistance. My church runs one. Some churches combine resources into a community pantry.

There is much help available. As Christmas is upon us, I would also encourage you to check with church or Salvation Army programs which will help.

You are not alone and you can get through this. Focus on trying to stay healthy and remaining "mom". Keep reaching our here and we will be happy to help answer questions. In the meanwhile, I will certainly add you to my prayers.

Re: What the heck happened?

Thank you MSJayhawk. I do plan to go to the ssa monday. I have a very close knit family who will help me through these rough times. Truth is I'm really gonna' miss working. I love the people I work with and will miss going in. I'm kinda worried about applying for ssdi, I heard it's really hard to get and can take years to be ok'd. Of course I gonna' apply but I'm not sure I'm up to the fight.

You cannot get workmans comp. was not on the job injury. Your employer will not pay for something that did not happen on the job. In her case it's not work related. Now if she was paying or std or ltd then she could use that. Std = short term disabilty ltd= long term disability.
