Warning if you need a Wound Vac
For any of you who might find yourselves in need of a wound vac - be sure to check to see what your insurance pays for rental of medical equipment. My husband had a wound vac after two foot surgeries, the first time for about 2 weeks, the second for 6 weeks. We have a great insurance plan and we stupidly did not check the plan before agreeing to the wound vac. Well....rental of the wound vac only is a little under $100 a day. That doesn't include the supplies. (By the way, this thing is just a little device - you wear on your shoulder - there's no way it costs that much money and is reusable from patient to patient. Huge rip off at $100 a day.) Anyway, after the first use the insurance paid the whole bill, so the second time we assumed it would pay the entire bill again. Wrong. They paid $2500 of the $13,000 bill. We were left with the rest.
Health providers are not required to disclose costs - even for equipment rental - prior to getting your signature where you agree that you'll pay what insurance doesn't. Well beware it may be much more than a copay you are signing up for. Check with your insurance company and ask your equipment provider to disclose the cost before you sign your name to anything!
