Just because one loses their job with an employer, it doesn't mean they lose their LTD coverage. If they were already disabled prior to losing their job, the coverage continues as long as the disability continues. Unless they were cut off LTD for another reason, such as the change of definition where they look to see if you are not just disabled from your OWN occupation, but also ANY occupation. Either way, yes the LTD company needs to be paid. They regularly run reports from the SSA and they find out if people are getting SSDI. You'd hate for your neighbor to spend all that money and then have to pay it back because with just SSDI as income that would be hard to pay back. A lot of companies only allow 2 years to pay it back so if it was spent, the LTD could take their whole SSDI check to pay them back. So, my advice is to double check with LTD because if they think they are losing LTD due to employment ending, that is false, and secondly, pay the LTD and avoid any future problems!!
