Too Old to be X-Ray Tech?

I am seriously considering getting an AA in Radiology but have questions. I am very interested in this field, but have a business background. I am 51 yrs old, divorced and have already registered for 3 classes in fall. Frankly, I am one of those folks who believe you are NEVER too old for anything, but I just need to hear pros/cons from you guys!

Thanks!

Re: Too Old to be X-Ray Tech?

You are never too old! I think you should do it if you're willing to. The program that I went through was a M-F 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM hospital based program. Needless to say it was pretty much out of the question to work during the week while going to school but I did manage a weekend job. It was tough for the two years that I was in the x-ray program but well worth it! There are tons of opportunities that an AA in RT can bring you! I wouldn't be where I am today with out it!

Re: Too Old to be X-Ray Tech?

I am an x-ray tech at a teaching hospital. The longer I'm in the business, the older the students are getting. I've seen a couple of them in their 50's come through our hospital to learn the trade. No you are not too old, but you must be in good shape because the work can be very physical. I guess the only thing I could say is that if you have back problems, maybe you should reconsider, but if the back is good, and the health is good. GO FOR IT!!!!!! I love my job. It's a great career.

Re: Too Old to be X-Ray Tech?

Go for it Singsong!!! I've been in the imaging field since 1982.I did x-rays,
Nuclear Medicine(on the job training,I kind of got thrown in there when the
registered tech became pregnant...I didn't like Nuc Med...just my personal
opinion) Interventional(arteriograms)and finally
settled on Ultrasound(which only took another year to become registered)
I LOVE my job and find it very rewarding....but like Xrayman said...it may
sometimes be strenuous..if you work in a hospital setting day shift...you can
always get help lifting...it's when you work evenings and nights that you run
into struggles with lifting and as MRIrene said there's the barium enemas ,
air contrast enemas and VCUs ugghhh! But hey some folks don't mind them.
I've been in an outpatient setting for 4 years now
and I love it...no call..no weekends and no holidays!
