I was recently hurt and went to the hospital where my information was given out to various lawyers without my permission.
I was told I have a very strong case but I am wondering if there is some compensation I can receieve or if the government gets it all.
HIPAA violations are enforced by the government after you make a complaint. The government collects a fine. You don't get anything. You don't hire a lawyer and you don't have a case against them personally. The government does it and the government gets the money. There is no private cause of action against the hospital unless your lawyer can find something under the state laws where you live.
