Smile Cna

I am a Cna in a nursing home and would like to know if anyone knows the best way to deal with the depression of working in geriatric care, it gets overwhelming to constantly get attatched to someone and then lose them. Its affecting my home life also it feels like its putting stress on my marriage to constantly come home depressed. Thanks

Re: Cna

Only one answer i'm afraid
change job
somewhere where there are less chances of forming attachments
you are helping other's but hurting yourself and your family
there is no cure for caring about people and as long as you are caring in these circumstances - there will never be a cure for your depression
catch 22

Re: Cna

I had a big problem with the same thing..... there is no easy way to distance yourself from your cna job...but the thing that helped me the most was when you go to prepare the body for the mortuary you pay your respects and say how you felt about them...don't talk about anything else just leave that their time!
And everyday that you go into work try and make a resident laugh...you might be the only one in their lives that make them smile...and if you do that then that is one more smile that they have experienced!
