Just ordered a juicer online-Questions :-)

I just ordered the Hamiltion Beach 800-Watt Big Mouth Juice Extractor...does anyone have this? Any tips? I'm a first time juicer-lol. Can anyone share recipes? Maybe info on what fruits/vegetables are good for different health concerns. Also what may be the lowest calorie with highest nutritional return (and of course good taste:p) combination. Thanks all:wave:!

I'm a fan of "green juice." I also have the same juicer and it is VERY good!

My basic recipe: 1 cucumber, 2 ribs of celery, 2 or 3 BIG handfuls of lettuce blend/spinach, etc, a broccoli stalk (very sweet) and sometimes a small apple or a few carrots. I will sometimes add some wheatgrass powder as well.

Enjoy!

tattoogirl,

Any tips? Yes: Use your juicer sparingly. The more you use it, the less fiber you will be geting in your diet. (It should be called a "fiber extractor.") Fiber is extremely important for a healthy diet and everyone should try to get about 35 grams of fiber per day. And that's not easy.

Fiber helps to keep your digestive system healthy. It adds bulk and helps keep the food moving without injuring your digestive tract. Fiber gives you a feeling of fullness and that provides a signal to stop eating. Fiber is considered to be a nutrient too. When bacteria in your stomach work on the fiber, certain vitamins are actually produced in the process.

And the best reason of all to have as much fiber in your diet as possible is for weightloss! Weightloss is greatly facilitated by fiber.

For more information read, "The Fiber35 Diet".

JohnR41-
Dang I thought the juicer for some reason didn't affect the fiber content too much. I never drink fruit juices from the store and thought this might be a healthy alternative to add some more veggies (one's I'm not very fond of). I eat a mainly vegetarian based diet...TONS of fiber, so I know where you are coming from. I used to be very vigilant as I was a vegan for many years and transitioned to a more vegetarian (not as militant-lol) way of eating. I was really sick for 2 years and was immobile for quite awhile and it was AWFUL as I was very active before and kept a healthy weight (at one point underweight but that's a whole other story). For some reason (meds included) it's been very difficult for me to get back to where I once was (I would settle to close to it though).

I wonder if adding a fiber supplement to the drink might be good too but I already get a steady amount of fiber already). I know the "real thing" is better. I'm just trying to find healthy alternatives to kick start me with some energy and vitamins instead of say coffee which I get to shaky on if I have more than 2 cups.

I will check out that book, thanks!

There are AMPLE opportunities for you to get fiber via whole grains and other veggies like potatoes, etc that you will eat as well. I use my juicer for the really great benefits you get from having a concentrated source of vitamins/enzymes and not for weight loss or any other reason. It's a great way to get 5 or 6 veggies into your system before 8 am...you have all day to eat fiber!

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!! That's what my intentions were as well! Instead of supplements to get "concentrated source of vitamins/enzymes", I thought the juicer would be a good alternative. I will try the recipe you provided when I get it.....I'm interested to see how the Broccolli stem/stalk is going to taste! Pass on any other recipes you may come across or create yourself too:). How do melons work in the machine? I'm not a huge fan but my grandmother swore by honey dew/cantaloupe (among other things) and she lived a long healthy life:angel: Thanks!

I suppose you can judge by bowel regularity. If you have no problems in that department then you're probably ok.

Also, if you have your blood tested and have no blood sugar problems you're probably ok there too. If you happen to have high blood sugar, it might not be a good idea to juice sweet fruit because you're going to consume concentrated sugar along with the concentrated nutrients.

So that leads me to a question: Does the concentrated sugar cancel out the benifits of the concentrated nutrients? Sorry, perhaps I need to start a new thread for that question.

Thanks for allowing me my two cents worth of input! ;-)

I swear by my juicer!

Take the vegetable pulp and add it to soaked bulgur wheat (1:2), adding wholewheat flour to make it all stick together. Season with turmeric and bake. Serve with lemon wedges, especially if the pulp has green leafy vegetables in it.

I don't juice fruit because fruits are my breakfast and I like the crunch.
