Sodium Fluoride + Terbinafine Hydrochloride = ??? - Hearing Disorders Message Board

Hi,

Hoping someone (Zip - this should be right up your street!) can answer this one for me please. Been prescribed Terbinafine hydrochloride (250mg tabs) for a toenail fungal infection and wondered what chemical cocktail I was creating in my stomach when it mixes with the Naf.
Because there's no info on Naf in the UK my GP is "hoping" ha ha there will be no adverse reaction.
Apparently the Terb can cause liver dysfunction but this is rare.
I've started taking it but take the Naf with one meal and the Terb with the next meal to try and keep them apart as much as poss just in case.

Any ideas/suggestions/comments etc???

Hi caz,

Partner finished a 90-day course in oral terbinafine (Lamisil) last year with spectacular results on several 40 year miserably fungoused nails....worked beautifully.

I wouldn't expect much of an interaction but I WOULD take them at different parts of the day lest the strong acid mangle the chemical structure of the fungicide (hideously expensive in the U.S.A) in your stomach.

I recommend you get a bottle of topical Lamisil OTC and apply it adjunctively for the next six months (even after you stop the 90 days of the oral) every day after abrading the nail (nails) surface lightly with a course emory board...Give the fungous a double whammy...you don't want to have to repeat the terbinafine because it's so hard on the liver (don't bother telling your doctor about the topical application...their brains are soooo delicate

!) The bottle costs around $10 American...get a tiny artists brush to spread a drop (dropper bottle) completely on your nail...no polish for the treatment period!

Thanks for the reply. It's always good to hear that these things do actually work. It's only on one of my big toes but it's become quite advanced - not the sort of thing I would dream of rushing to the doc for but with the Naf I thought maybe that could affect the healing process. I wondered if potential lack of calcium would affect nail growth - but doc reckons not.

Glad it won't create some horrible acidy goo of my internal organs!

Will get some otc stuff as you suggested - thanks. It's expensive here too - doc only said he'd prescribe the tabs because it was too advanced for the paint-on stuff to work on its own....I just need to find a tiny artist now...

it takes nearly two months to see the first little bit of "healthy pink" at the base of the nail but the result at the healing line is quite dramatic!
