Probably not too much correlation from childhood. The ear infections of childhood are typically bacteria and affect the middle ear.
Inner ear infections are usually viral and a hangover from a cold. (Bacterial infections of the inner ear are a DEADLY searious matter.)
Wither the altitude change, or an infection, can cause an irritation of the inner ear and your symptoms but the former won't cause the latter but the air travel can expose an underlying infection that you hadn't noticed.
Try some meclizine for the vertigo symptoms...it will probably go away soon all by itself. (It's awful isn't it?
