| What's it like getting tubes as an adult?

I have been diagnosed with ETD for month and a half now. Pop/crackle every time I swallow, worse in left ear. I am getting tubes put in week from Monday...had them as a small child, but not as an adult.
My ENT is doing it as an office procedure with local anesthetic. Did you have your doc put in the cream or use a needle in your ear to numb your eardrum? (AH that sounds awful!) I am scared to death really, so I wanted to know what the procedure was like. Does it last a long time? Painful???? I'm thinking of popping a Xanax before I go in...
But I am ready for the popping to end so I can get a decent night's sleep!
