Question Horrible Ear Popping, cant get any sleep!!

I have been having this horrible ear-popping problem for several months now, and it is only when I am going to sleep! It is like the ear popping you get in an airplane, only it is constant and rapid, like a "pop, pop, pop, pop" as I drift off to sleep, or will doze off and be woken up with that awful sound. I have had problems with insomnia my entire life, and this has only added to that problem, since it is hard for me to even get a decent nights rest and has been going on for so long now, I am really feeling the effects of cumulative sleep-loss.

I am not sure what this could be, but after a LONG wait finally got to see an ENT doctor last week. Well I FINALLY got into see the ENT doctor (its sick how long it takes to get to see one), and of course since my ears only go crazy when I am going to sleep, it wasnt doing it when I was at the doctors office so he couldnt see anything. He told me he believes its probably the E.Tube and the ear drum having spasms, but couldnt explain why it only does it when I am laying down & going to sleep..... He did say that it doesnt appear to be doing any damage and that my hearing is still fine, and while thats good news, I cant believe that Im just supposed to keep dealing with this insane ear problem whenever I am trying to get some sleep!!

This is to the point where I still dread going to sleep because I know its going to start at some point, or even if I can doze off before it starts, I will be wakened by that crazy sound of my ears popping and get bad, broken sleep virtually every night. The bags under my eyes look like Ive been thru a war, and I can feel the effects of not getting enough good sleep over time: Fatigue, Stress, Crankiness, even sort of "seeing things" that happens when youre going thru a bad spot of no sleep.

The doctor said he thinks it will go away on its own, but since he said it usually doesnt last more than a month or two, that doesnt sound right since mine has been doing this for a much longer time than that. Ive read thru alot of posts here, and since I know how much it drives me crazy when I am trying to sleep, I cant imagine how it is for those of you who also have it when they are going about their day! So im wondering, how do you all deal with something like this that is driving you nuts, keeping you from sleeping, and something that nobody around you understands because they just dont get it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Should I try another ENT doctor or would it be a waste of time, since it wont be doing it when I go there and they wont find anything going on? And has anyone else heard of this, or had experiences like this with their ears constantly popping when they try to sleep? Im just not sure how much more of this I can take......Ive even noticed some grey hairs coming in & I think its because my body has not been getting the needed rest for several months now.

I hope someone out there has an idea of what Im describing, because Im just not sure how to deal with this anymore, on top of other health problems I have to deal with already. Thank you for anything that you can share, I would appreciate any comments that might help me understand what this is, or even how to tolerate this horrid sleeping situation....Thank You!

hi,
i can certainly understand what you are going through, i have myoclonus of the e tube and middle ear, severing the tendons in the middle ear has helped some, please look back on my posts. this beast is different in everyone, but scince yours is only at night a muscle relaxer might help.
you should see a neurotoligist, and see if they can determine what muscle is spasming.....the middle ear can be snipped....no biggie. the e tube can be botoxed, i have not tried this yet but i might.
where are you located? i know where some top drs are....believe me not many know about myoclonus.....your lucky yours is on to it!

Re: Horrible Ear Popping, cant get any sleep!!

Could it be your sinuses are draining because you are lying down? My ears as I said before run my life. Perhaps it is the eardrum doing it as fluid either passes by or whatever, but if it is so loud as to wake you up, I would find a specialist who deals with sleep apnea - maybe they would have a grip on what type of things your ears can do to interrupt sleep. I feel for you, I never sleep either, have you tried that new drug Lunesta? I guess same as Ambien, but next time I see my doc I am going to inquire about it. I think not knowing what it is causing you anxiety and I don't blame you, but I can't imagine that it is something serious. I was convinced for years that there was a spider or bug of some kind living in my ear, but I think if the working parts are disturbed in any way, it is so close to your head and your senses that you experience things on a very enhanced or ramped up level, which is understandable. Guess our bodies talk too loud sometimes!!! I haven't had much luck with ENT docs, but the ones that are specialist about dizziness, etc, may also have knowledge as to what the cause is. Good luck.
