Pulsatting, Washing Machine Noise in Right Ear

Hey guys, I went to the doctors today since I have been getting a pulsating, washing machine sound in my right ear - sort of like blood being pumped by yur ear. Is there anyone else on this board who has had this? What was the cause? Was there any solution?

He has referred me to an ENT specialist to get an MRI. I have been getting the noise for the past 6 months. When I tilt my head on it's left side or forward the noise intensifies. When I tilt my head further enough on the right side it seems to lessen. When I tilt my head further enough back it stops - but that isn't really a solution as I would get a very sore neck if I had to walk round like that all day, and I think people would see me as a bit of a snob. I don't normally get it in the morning, it gradually comes on during the day, intensifying at night. I get it the worst when tired or stressed, although sometimes it can be loud when I'm not tired or stressed. The noise increases the more I move my head and if I move it quickly enough it almost sounds like a whipping sound - as though the blood rushes away and whips back quickly.

I can sleep at night, but I think that might partly be partly because I have me fan on and also the noise stops (as I mentioned earlier) when my neck is tilted back.

Occasionally it can be difficult to hear people on the phone. Most of the time I can't hear it but it is a HUGE disstraction as I have just started uni and have a tonne of reading to do, which is hard to concentrate on when your ear is making a pulsating, washing machine noise.

Does anyone have any suggestions to what might have caused this? Are there solutions to make the noise go away? My appointment is in a couple of weeks time but I'm really anxious to find out whether it is serious or not, or whether it is treatable.

My doctor said it could be anything from hearing loss, a tumor, an infection or virus - I read somewhere that you should get your heart checked if you are getting the pulsating (which actually matches up with when my heart beats - the noise has the same pattern) noises. I'm just worried about all the things it might be.

Re: Pulsatting, Washing Machine Noise in Right Ear

Hi, I have been getting the exact same thing in both ears for the past few weeks. Like you said it gradually gets worse and then at night time it is awful.. I don't get dizzy but I do have nausea sometimes. My ears have been checked by my doctor and they are clear. She gave me some anti-nausea medicine which didn't help my ears at all. I too have heard about the heart thing and that worries me because I have a heart murmur and I also get palpitations. I have been very stressed during the last few months and wondered if maybe that it something to do with it. I have an awful lot of tension in my shoulders, neck, jaw etc. Its a horrible feeling . I also have a whistling sound. It is all really bad at night when I go to bed. Maybe I notice it more because it is quiet.

that is a muscle spasm in the ear, the stapedial and or the tensor tympani.

Re: Pulsatting, Washing Machine Noise in Right Ear

I have almost the exact same condition. Mine has been for 4-5 months. The sound is definately the blood flowing. I also have a humming in my left ear to go along with the whooshing in my right. But I could live with the humming. Mine is constant though it is a bit quieter in the mornings. I have recently found out I have very high blood pressure which might be part of the problem. I have an appointment with my doctor next week (again) to have this checked out and I'm going to ask for some blood tests as well. But really with blood pressure as high as mine seems to be I shouldn't even need to ask for the tests. The doctor should know to do them!

Smile Re: Pulsatting, Washing Machine Noise in Right Ear

I have ringing, hissing, popping throbbing twittering and droaning. At first i thought there was a deisal engine tickin over in the next street, I used to get up and look out my window, now i tell myself there is an engine ticking over in the next street! and birds twittering in the garden! not in my ears so I can get to sleep. I concentrate on the noises and try to understand it..usually fall asleep concentrating and trying to count the different sounds. Nothing else works for me,sorry, it is depressing and unfair, sometimes I have a good cry, but try not to let it get to me too much, I would give up!.

I have the exact same thing going on with me. Did you find out the cause of the noise, I have an appointment for a CT and I'm kinda nervouse. Anything you found out about it will be helpful. It does sound like a washing machine. I'm so glad to find out I'm not crazy and there are other people who have the same noise going on.
