haering loss in children - fluctuation and progress - Hearing Disorders Message Board

my 5 years old son was diagonised as a uniletral (one side)hearing loss at age 3. in fact he himself noticed and claimed that why poeple do not hear from left ear! late on during teh past 2 years he had experinced a fluctuation in hearing in teh right ear. specially during and after common cold. ENT specialist have always claimed that this is to liquid in teh middle ear but even after insertion of tubes is happend and even worse. we did ABR and PTA test and they showed that even from last time (2 yaers back) there was a drop in haering in teh right ear. the sad story is that teh frequency of these fluctuations is getting more and teh drop in teh attcks is worse. teh ENT specialists claims that they do not know teh reason and maybe it continue till total deafness.
i would like to hear from any body who knows about similar cases and any possible treatment. we are stock and near the edge.

First of all fluid in the ear that is not totally taken care of can cause the permanent hearing loss. Tubes are not always the answer. I had fluid in my ears when I was a child after having the measles and despite numerous antibiotics and tubes in the ears twice they could not seem to totally take care of the problem so I permanent hearing loss bilaterally. Your son may have some days where hearing is better than others and depending on the tone or pitch of things he may seem to hear better at certain times. There are a lot of factors but just keep up with the followup appointments with his ENT specialist and if a hearing aid should be recommended by all means get him one. Good Luck.
