Tympanoplasty Surgery Recovery - Hearing Disorders Message Board

I have had tympanoplasty surgery (patching a perforated ear drum) performed recently, five days ago.

I am experiencing pain in my ear. I thought I should not have pain anymore. I also am hearing a roaring noise again. I did not hear the noise for a couple days after surgery, but do now.

I would like to know from anyone who has had this surgery what their recovery was like. I would also like to know how successful the operation was.

Surgery was successful for me. Have had this done once due to a perforated ear drum and twice to repair the hole they made at the time they replaced all the little bones inside my ear to help improve my hearing. Everything went well for me and I don't every recall a roaring or any real pain after the first day. Why not call the doc's nurse first thing Monday morning and have her check with doc about this for you. If it really bothers on the weekend don't hesitate to head for your nearest urgent care place and have it checked out.

The roaring noise you are hearing may be similar to this rapid fluttering sound I hear in noisy environments. It may be a certain nerve or muscle around the hearing bones that acts up. Do see your doctor about it. There may be certain drugs that can freeze that muscle. Also, the surgery may have had an effect on your eustachian tube. The roaring noise may be the symptom of it being open slightly. (Normally, the eustachian tube is closed). This probably can be treated with muscle relaxers.
