Will I go deaf with loud music? - Hearing Disorders Message Board

Hi!

I got my licence about 2 years ago and since that time i have had a new car with full sound system in it (no subs just top quality sorround sound) i alwys listen to music everytime i go in the car at a pretty loud sound-ppl cant hear it from miles away, but it can be heard if say you are standing outside next to my car. i listen to cds not radio and i heard the other day that the loud music can deafen you. i am starting to become worried that i will become deaf in a few years...does anyone know further on this? im beginning to become paranoid about listening to the music too loudly. is there a certain volume you should have it at in order so that u dont become deaf? any help would be appreciated.

Yes loud music as well as other loud sounds such as saws, lawnmowers and other things can cause you to lose your hearing. You probably will not go deaf but it will cause hearing loss over a period of time. That is why people wear ear plugs when mowing the grass etc......................to protect their hearing.

Every time you listen to loud music there are individual nerve cells that are dying in your ears. This adds up over years and years. You won't notice anything at first but when you are older you will begin to wonder why you can't understand what people are saying. Hearing loss is cumulative. Protect what you have now. You can't get it back.

Wildpink,

Loud music in an enclosed car will definitely deafen you- and sooner rather than later. It's good you're on to it now....listen to music as softly as you can bear.

I WINCE when a car goes by and the music is annoying to me and I realize that the windows are UP....the rapid destruction that is happening to the driver's hearing must be astounding....like sticking a knitting needle into each ear!

I've listened to loud music in my home and in my car for many years. I have had tinitus for some time now and though have not had a hearing test, I don't think my hearing functions as it should. I've heard tinitus can be a result of loud noise over time. It is rather annoying. So I guess the answer is, turn down the music.
