Blocked Ear- Help! - Hearing Disorders Message Board

Last December I had a blocked ear that was solved by putting oil in it for a few days followed by an ear Syringing at the doctors. During the next few months it still would occasionally "click" and go deaf and them "unclick". Two weeks ago it went deaf and has stayed that way!! All I get is a sort of "rushing sound" and its driving me nuts! I repeated the oil and doctor treatment. Different doctor and he used a slightly different method of Syringing. After a couple of attempts there was no improvement. He suggested that I continue with the oil for a few more days and them try again. By now my ear and surrounding area was hurting (rather like severe toothache), and I guess that all that oil has caused the wax to swell and cause this pressure. So I made a further apointment and got yet another doctor. He said that there didn't appear to be infection but gave me Otosporin ear drops and told me to use that for a week or so, and also cancel that other appointment to get the ear Syringed. It was hard to tell from the doctors off hand attitude whether these drops were just to reduce this pain or should resolve the deaf/blocked ear problem. I have used these drops since Thursday and there has been no improvement. Its now getting to me..

Any ideas?

Bill,

If your Health Plan allows it, see an ear specialist for that cleaning. I have a friend with VERY teeny ear canals that clog regularly and GP's always fiddle for 3/4 hour and still wind up making a pig's breakfast of it.

An ear specialist will clean it while using a microscope to see what he's doing.

Thanks for your reply. I am with the good old NHS over here in England. Guess I would need to go private to get a more specialised treatment. But if this condition continues may well go that way.

Since the doc didn't see any wax in your ear canal nor specific infection then it doesn't pay to have your ears flushed if there is no excess wax to flush out. You may be having fluid in the eardrum that is causing the clogged sensation which is why the doc gave you the antibiotic ear drops. Continue with them for the prescribed amount of days and also use a decongestant to help with any congestion. It may take a while to get rid of this. Keep your doc posted on how things are going and see him again if it doesn't clear in the recommended amount of time.

Gosh, I've got the same thing right now and it is driving me nuts too. Did you ever figure out how to fix it.
