13 Yr old daughter has Otosclerosis-Have questions - Hearing Disorders Message Board

Her dr. recommended surgery. Is it better to have surgery now or wait until she is older? If her hearing gets worse will that make the surgery more difficult? Her hearing isn't too bad now so I am concerned about risking surgery now and take a chance that she might lose all hearing if something goes wrong. My first thought was to take a wait and see approach and get hearing aids if she needs them and maybe she will be okay with that. Then I read a few things that suggested that waiting could actually make the problem more difficult to treat in the future. Currently she has about a 25% loss in both ears. Thank you.

hi, if she can hear good now it's better to wait, the problem is the neurosensorial hearing loss, if it's big, because with the surgery you can close the bone gap between neuros. heairn loss and transmissive hearing loss..do you understand me? sorry but I'm not english...

I think the question i would ask the Doctors ( and I would get a second opinion on this) is if having the surgery now is reccomended over waiting until she is older. As this is a condition of bones hardening, is it possible that she may have to have it done agan later as the bones mature?
I don't know.
Assuming the answer is no, do it now IMHO. They will do one ear at a time. if the first one goes bad ( chances are 1% or ther abouts) they will not do the other ear.
As a rule the younger a person is, the easier surgery is --recuperation

thank you for your response. Her dad and I decided to talk to the doctor and ask him these questions. I guess I was stunned when he told us and wasn't even sure what to ask or even what this was all about. Thank God, we live in a time and place where surgery is even a possibility.
