deafness 5 years after stapedectomy - Hearing Disorders Message Board

Hello,
I had stapedectomy surgery in my right ear in Oct 2003. Three weeks ago, I suddenly went deaf in that same ear. For 10 days my doctor/surgeon put me on Cortisone, with no changes. I had a CT Scan, but it showed that the prosthetic has not moved. The doctor wants me to wait another month, have another hearing test then see her again. Do the prosthetics ever malfunction? What else could cause such a sudden and complete hearing loss? I can't come to terms with fact that I might be permanently deaf. Very loud noises will cause a kind of vibrating-shock sensation in my ear. There is also a weird sound when taking a shower and the water is hitting the inside of the ear. What could that be?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry I don't have any answers as I just had my stapedectomy last week, really hoping it goes ok in the long run as that is the whole idea..right!
I just wanted to offer my sympathies and hope that this is just a temporary thing for you. I know it is probably impossible NOT to stress over it. Are you having any tinnitus issues with the deafness?
I have my follow up apt today I will ask my surgeon what could happen. I will post later.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sure your recovery will go without a hitch. The success rate is very high for this kind of surgery. It looks like my problem involves nerve hearing loss now, rather than the bone hearing loss, which stapedectomy surgery addresses. I'm still holding out hope that I can be helped with perhaps cochlear implants. I have some doctor visits coming up in the near future.

I finally go the packing out the suction was like a jet plane in my ear! I can hear but have some echoing....also my tounge is pretty numb, apparently this should all settle down in time (!)
I did ask about your situation but he obviously couldn't really say anything much....drs go figure!
I know someone who has has a number of major ear surgeries including a plastic eardrum, the first one in Canada. So I am hoping you can find a solution that you can live with

Do you have hearing loss in both ears? I only have hearing loss in the ear I had surgery on, other one seems fine for now.

Thanks for your kind words and thank you fro taking the time to talk to your doctor for me. I only have hearing loss (bone and nerve) in my right ear. The tinnitus, since going completely deaf is not quite as bad, and there is less pain. When there is loud noises there's static.
The symptoms you described will go away shortly. Your hearing will get better and better over time. It took me about a month until it was to the level it was going to be at.
