My daughter was recently diagnosed w/ loss of hearing in her left ear, any reason to why this would happen? She is only 7 and her appt isn't until Jan 20. Thank you

Is there any one else in your family who suffers from hearing loss? there are conditions that are hereditary. Any kind of head trauma also.
I have otosclerosis which was only diagnosed when I was 28 I probably went deaf (in one ear ) as a infant/child and no one picked up on it not even me!
THere are great dr and surgeons out there now that perform amazing things on all kinds of hearing conditions and hearing aids are so diverse now too.

I'm guessing her appt on the 20th is with a specialist? If so, who diagnosed her? My daughter began losing her hearing when she was almost 6 years old. We knew of no injuries or illnesses that would have caused it...no family history. There was never an explanation. She started out with about a 15 to 20% loss in both ears. She immediately began wearing hearing aids. Within a year and a half, it progressed quickly to about a 75% loss. Now, she is going to be 15 years old this summer and only has about 5% of her hearing left. BUT....she still is able to benefit from hearing aids, so she does quite well. We also had her at Mayo Clinic a couple of years ago for an MRI to see if there were any congenital malformations, but nothing. We still have no idea what happened....and we most likely never will. But, we have stayed on top of this and worked with our county and made sure that resources were made available to her in school so she didn't suffer academically, she is in aggressive speech therapy so she doesn't lose her speech. Since she developed speech before losing her hearing, she has been able to maintain that speech for the most part. She has a very very slight impediment, but not much of one at all. If you don't know that she has a severe hearing loss prior to speaking to her, you wouldn't discover it upon speaking to her.....that is how good her speech is.

Anyway....I've kind of rambled on and on about this......but my point is that your daughter will be ok. I remember being so upset and worried when we first learned of my daughters hearing loss and I was devastated. But, my daughter is a healthy and happy teenage girl and I couldn't ask for more. It could be worse.
